Why are we calling it a Sprite when clearly, it’s an MG Midget, well BMC actually developed and released this well-known model of British sports car in 1958 and it was then later absorbed by MG in 1961, they were all built in the same Abingdon factory and sold under both Austin Healey and MG badges until 1971, enthusiasts of the marque often refer to these rarer original brand cars as “Spridgets”.
There will be a few Healey Sprites for sale, some at silly money, some needing hours of work and occasionally a well-priced, drive away gem like this one pops up, where someone has done all the work and spent all the money, it’s not to be missed, read on…..

1965 MKIII model in very good all-round condition with a totally solid underside, running and driving spot on, it’s clearly had a lot of very recent investment with signs of new parts, service work and restoration visible throughout the car. It’s a really good looker, the hood on these early models stores completely out the way, leaving really smooth sporty lines.
It starts very easily and runs well, pulling strongly through all the gears, it stops well with discs brakes upfront, no veering or vibration (see video), its steady at speed with no wandering or vagueness of any kind, the steering wheel is rock steady and if you press the “go” pedal hard it’s quick at getting up to the speed limit, we have checked the fluids for correct level and contamination and there's no breathing from the oil cap when running, again see the video. The 1098cc engine has new oils and filters recently fitted, the oil is still clear, a check of the compression shows an equal 148psi on all four pots. The odometer is showing 31000 mile’s but we cannot confirm this.
The smart interior has the better Healey seats with a slight curve to the backrest giving more support, looks to be a new carpet set with no wear or damage, good door cards and an unmolested dashboard with no modern intrusions, it has the optional heater fitted and a smart upgraded steering wheel finishes off the cockpit really well, it’s a sung place to get comfy for some motoring adventures.
Both doors, boot and bonnet open, click shut and lock, the windows wind down, the quarter light vents twist, the side lights, head lights, brake lights, wipers, indicators all work. The hood is in as new condition free from any rips, splits or damage it fits snugly, the windows are crystal clear with no signs of any crease or even fold lines.
The paintwork is very, very presentable, it’s been recently completely repainted to a very high standard by a skilled operator, great job completed. Bright work is all good, not new and slightly aged with some minor pitting. Tyres are matching set fitted on the desirable wire spoke wheels, they are almost new (still got pips on) with matching wire spare wheel in the boot with a good tyre on. It’s totally solid underneath, the sill’s, floor pans, jacking points, chassis legs are solid, we have had it 6ft in the air, there are multiple new fixings, pipes and parts underneath fixed with still shiny new bolts, it’s had serious money spent on it, see the pics and video, any inspection welcome.
We have the full logbook, several old logbooks, two sets of keys, a history files containing a selection of invoices and old MOTS, old tax discs, a heritage certificate, a few photographs of the restoration, its HPI clear with full printout and the car is TAX and MOT exempt.
As expected, at just over 58 years old it’s not entirely perfect, close inspection will find minor flaws with the seat coverings, the oil pressure and temperature gauge work correctly the other dash clocks need fiddling with and adjusting, the indicator stalk “click” is not working but a new one came with the car, minor jobs easily sorted or replaced on a Sunday morning with some tea bags and digestive’s at hand, apart from these, typical of the brand, niggles we cant find much else to point out.
Draw out of your boring ISA, get out the picnic hamper and go and enjoy your hard-earned savings, you still have a car to sell if you want to cash in later and you will be making memories instead of a pittance of interest.
There are loads of these fun British sports cars to pick from, more MG than Healey but you simply will not find another this well demonstrated, with everything shown to you before you leave the house, nothing hidden and nothing to hide. This car has most likely had more spent on it in recent years than we are asking for it today.
A smile every mile, the hard works been done, it’s the rarer model and in top condition, what’s not to like.

To save the hassle of sorting it out, at the full asking price, we have included delivery of this car to any UK mainland address within 300 miles (by road, not as the crow flies) of our base near Carlisle. Other destination will receive a discount pro rata to 300 miles. We will bring it direct to your door on our own transport.
