The 220 S debuted at Frankfurt in 1956 as the top-level version of a new model line of vehicles slotted between the 190 sedans and the coachbuilt 300d. It used the company’s envelope-style “ponton” body and shared a family resemblance to the sporty 190 SL and mighty 300 SL. Unlike those specialty two-seaters, however, the 220 S was hand-finished to carry passengers in luxury on a daily basis. Mercedes built just 1, 066 Cabriolets in 1957, accounting for only 6. 5 percent of production. Cabriolets cost 75% more than a comparable 220 S Sedan, so befitting its station, it has trim and rear lamps that echo the 300 series, as well as unique sheet metal that looks fantastic with the fully collapsible roof either up or down.

The magnificent 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220 S Cabriolet featured here is finished in gorgeous Dove Grey over Black leather with a Dark Blue folding convertible top. This exquisite motorcar was reportedly purchased new by Prince Rainier III of Monaco and given to his wife, Princes Grace. In 1965, Herr Schultz purchased this stunning 220 S Cabriolet while visiting Monaco and had it shipped back to his home in Napa Valley, California where he would meticulously maintained it and drove it sparingly. After 38 years of ownership, Mr. Schultz sold this coveted Mercedes-Benz to Napa Valley attorney M. C. Bishop, who commissioned a comprehensive show-quality restoration completed in 2005 before the car eventually joined a world-class collection. We are proud to offer what we believe to be an exceptionally historic and important Mercedes-Benz Cabriolet to market! I personally believe the investment potential of this piece of motoring history will grow beyond your imagination, offered to the most sophisticated investor, collector, or enthusiast who understands and appreciates the investment potential of this iconic motorcar.
