Description
Classic Car Design presents this rare 1957 Mercedes 220S Ponton W180 coupé. At the time it was hand-assembled on the basis of the cabriolets, and Mercedes is said to have produced only around 1, 250 (about 830 more in injection). The saloon was launched in 1953 and the coupé in 1956. The W180 generation marked a genuinely new era for Mercedes, breaking with pre-war models, notably adopting a body with integrated wings. This example appears to be of French origin, although the penultimate owner kept it for over 25 years.
On the outside, this car is overall in satisfactory condition, though it shows some signs of use and middling-quality paint. The numerous chrome wheel trims and mouldings are present, mostly in good condition, though some will need restoration. The bodywork and subframes show no perforating corrosion.
Inside, this Mercedes 220S offers the distinctive ambience of 1950s/ 60s Mercs, combining leather, wood and chrome. All is in good condition; the leather upholstery and carpets were refurbished a few years ago. The headliner looks a little older but is in excellent condition as well. The veneer is re-finished and the instrumentation all works.
Mechanically, under the long bonnet, you’ll find the 2. 2-litre six-cylinder engine fed by carburettors, delivering adequate performance and, above all, a soundtrack befitting the car’s status. The mechanics benefited from a recent overhaul, notably carburetion, ignition, and certain suspension bushings and ball joints…
In short, these models are rare on the market and even rarer in France; you could count them on one hand. This example, even if it requires some cosmetic work, is among the cheapest on the market and is priced at its expert valuation dating from more than four years ago. With this coupé, you’re assured of driving a model that stands out from the ordinary.
