This model was produced in just over 2, 000 examples, with only 830 units manufactured in 1958 – a drop in the ocean of Mercedes production.
Ordered new by a prominent female personality from Hamburg in 1958, this particularly special motor crossed the Atlantic in 1960 for a journey spanning over 50 years. The Reynolds family looked after it for a decade, then James Schulz became its custodian for around thirty years. When its whereabouts were rediscovered in 2015 by a passionate Hamburg collector and enthusiast, he acquired it with considerable emotion, as its state of preservation led him to conclude it was the most authentic and least altered Ponton he had ever encountered.
Exterior Condition:
This Mercedes 220 S Ponton Coupé presents in an ivory finish. An earlier paint application shows age-related deterioration, but overall the car still presents well.
The glazing, trim, lights and badges are complete and well preserved.
The car is equipped with its original sunroof.
The underside of this Mercedes reveals an exceptionally rare state of preservation, with no distortion or welding. The chassis and floor pans are rust-free, with only proper wax treatment applied to the original metal and hollow sections.
Interior Condition:
The cabin is entirely original and transports you to a unique world. Never restored, the red leather upholstery displays a sublime patina, testament to bygone quality.
The car is equipped with its original Becker Mexico radio, perfectly integrated into the wooden console.
Mechanical Condition:
This 220 S is equipped with its original engine, fed by Solex 32 PAJTA carburettors.
The engine runs perfectly and delivers impressive performance.
The manual gearbox, clutch and steering offer surprisingly pleasant and comfortable driving for its year.
