SUMMARY
Originally supplied by Mercedes-Benz of Leipzig (Ordered to full UK specification by Mercedes-Benz of Chichester), it was registered in the UK to its first owner by MB Chichester, just seven days after it was delivered to the German dealership. Interestingly all the W208 CLK430?s I?ve had, have all been ordered this way i. e. through German dealerships; I think it was because the CLK430 was made in limited numbers, so were very expensive so quite difficult to obtain.
This is a simply stunning vehicle, and is also the much rarer CLK430 V8 Coupe; most were Convertibles. Costing almost £60K, the first owner, a rather wealthy lady kept it for almost sixteen years, having it serviced by MB when required. She only covering a mere 16, 000 miles in her fifteen year tenure, which makes you wonder why she even bought a car like this, especially given its very high cost price
The car was then sold in 2015 to a gentleman who proceeded to cover almost 35, 000 in the two years he owned it, having it serviced again on the dot, and attending properly to any issues that arose in that time. Anyone who knows these cars will tell you that these cars just love to be driven and this use will have certainly done the car the world of good, and would have blown away any ?cobwebs? and shaken down any issues associated with very low mileage cars.
I actually know this car rather well having first sold it in 2017 (at 51, 000 miles) to a gentleman from London. He used the car for occasional longer trips north, and also to Germany, however in his four year tenure he only covered around 6000 miles. I spoke to him recently and he says it?s the best car he?s ever owned. However during the lockdown of 2021, due to lack of use, he sold the car, where it found its way through a dealer to an enthusiast in Cheshire. By chance, the owner of the car was looking to sell in earlier this year, and he rang me, not knowing my connection with the vehicle. As soon as he said Tanzanite Blue CLK430, I asked?it isn?t X56 NAA is it?? to which he answered ?how do you know that?? Three weeks later we were reunited; the drive home reminded me just how incredibly awesome this car is.
This has to be the ultimate "Q-car" too. From the outside, it just looks like a regular W208 CLK to those not really in the know, but the underpinnings of the CLK430 borrow many of the features of the CLK55 AMG, to handle the massive and seemingly endless power that the glorious M113 V8, which can haul this car to illegal speeds very, very quickly indeed!. The great thing here though, is being registered pre March 2001, it falls into the flat rate tax band, so a year?s road tax is only £295. Also, don't think that it guzzles fuel like Oliver Reed used to knock back Scotch; that's a myth too, and if driven sensibly, it will return very respectable fuel consumption, with thirties on a run, and high twenties around town?. a petrol A-Class only manages that around town, but is nowhere near as entertaining to drive.
As with other Mercedes of this era (W202/ W210/ R170 etc), bodywork can be an area of concern, however this CLK430 is totally exceptional, with none of the associated ills often found on the W208, in fact it still has the look of a much younger vehicle. I usually find if they've survived to this age without corrosion taking hold, they're usually one of the cars that seem not to have been affected; I've had a few W202 C-Classes recently, all well over twenty years old that had no corrosion whatsoever.
So there you have it, a very well specified, extremely well looked after Mercedes CLK Coupe in truly immaculate condition. It also has a rather interesting option 884 ?Trunk Lid with Additional Locking System? This is a triple catch system on the boot lid, which makes it ultra secure. However this CLK has the added dimension of a stonkingly good V8 engine. I think every true petrol head should at some point in their motoring career, own at least one car with a V8 engine; the experience is just something else, and no modern three or four cylinder engine, regardless of how many turbo chargers, and superchargers you bolt to them, will ever recreate that massive, raw gut wrenching, low down torque that a good V8 produces?. and there's the sound too!. Sadly the opportunity of owning a V8 engined car is becoming ever more difficult to achieve, as the radical environmentalists get their way, and kill off prospects of any future cars being fitted with such epic engines, further compounded by the fickle government continuing to increases taxes on car registered after the March 2001 ?watershed?. As such, this has got to be the cheapest, and some would say the last chance, to stick up two fingers at the establishment, and experience that pure V8 muscle, and at a very reasonable cost too. No one does V8's quite as well as Mercedes (in my opinion, anyway!), and one drive of this car will have any true petrol head totally smitten.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don't just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won't notice; I just couldn't and wouldn't do that. The cars I source are carefully selected, and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have.
