The new generation of Mercedes-Benz coupes and cabriolets was introduced in 1961 by Paul Bracq. Directly derived from the W111 saloon, the coupe was first sold as a 220 SE version and was replaced by the 250 SE. Equipped with a 2. 5L in-line six cylinder engine, this elegant coupe was in its day one of the most expensive cars in the world.
Not much is known about the early history of this car other than it was UK supplied new and then travelled to the US at some stage before returning to the UK in 1994.
The current owner purchased it and imported to Ireland in 2000. In 2005/ 2006 the car underwent a comprehensive restoration by T and D Heaney, Mercedes restoration specialists in Derry.
The vehicle had a complete body rebuild including new floors, two new front fenders, two rear fenders, rear wheel arches, rear panel, boot floor, new side member panels.
The vehicle was then completely repainted in solid black using ICI 2k products. All the chrome work was either replated or replaced as necessary, the interior wood panels were re-veneered and lacquered, the interior was completely re-trimmed in original quality German leather, with new carpets fitted along with a new headliner.
The engine was rebuilt, the injection system was overhauled, suspension and brakes were also over hauled, all worn items were replaced, new tyres and wheel finishers were also fitted.
In 2009 it was suggested the car have an insurance value of €70, 000.
Since the vehicle has been with the current owner it has been serviced regularly (twice per year) and is kept in excellent condition with any items requiring attention being attended to immediately.
17 years later the car presents today in generally good condition. The cosmetics have aged gracefully while the car remains in good mechanical order. It has been the owners daily driver up to now albeit with low annual mileage covered.
