Principle Facts
The R107 Mercedes-Benz SL was usually referred to as the Panzerwagen, drawing a parallel to the tank. It replaced the beautiful Pagoda SL and stayed on sale for 18 years, making it one of the longest-selling Mercedes-Benz models. A clear move away from the simple and elegant lines of the W113 Pagoda and towards a Brutalist, almost slab-sided appearance, the R107 SL's design wasn't the reason for it to be bestowed with adjectives like 'tank-like'. It was rather how well-built these were. And even when after nearly two decades on sale, when it was about to be replaced by the R129 SL, it didn't look old or dated. Unsurprisingly, timelessness remains to be its USP, more than three decades after it was discontinued. With nearly 240, 000 examples sold globally, offered with a choice of straight-six and V8 engines, the R107 SL has a reputation for being exceptionally long-lasting, especially if cared for. Many would agree that this generation of the SL is a definite icon from the 20th century, and owing to its solid build, one doesn't have to go back in time to enjoy it!

Condition Synopsis
Here's a well-specced 1989 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL with distinctly low mileage and in overall great nick. With the current keeper for about five years, the car has been sparingly used, covering only about 2, 500 miles in said period. Not just that, it's only done 47, 297 miles since new, which can be verified with the help of some old MoT receipts and included service records. The other noteworthy bit about this 1989 500 SL is that it's been specced rather tastefully: Blue-Black exterior paint, Mushroom interior, heated seats and mirror, optional rear seats, black foldable roof, etc. And being a 500 SL, it had the distinction of being the most powerful iteration of the R107 available from the factory - its M117 V8 engine was claimed to make 240 hp. Needless to say, even now, the car's overall pace and extremely confident drive would pleasantly surprise many newcomers, and at the same time, ensure that it keeps up with modern traffic with absolute ease - both on motorways and through urban conditions.

History File
Bought by the current owner in 2018, this 1989 500 SL has done just over 47k miles since new. According to the records and a word from the seller, it had done about 40, 000 in the first ten years of its life. After which, it's said to have been stored in a heated garage. A recommission followed that and the car was brought to the state it's currently in. Its first inspection was done in the year 1991 when the car's mileage was just 1600 miles. The only repair that the seller had to do with the car was the fuel pump, the invoice for which has been included.

SLSHOP Summary
Owing to the immensely successful run the R107 SL has had over the eighteen years it was on sale, it's still possible to get a car of one's choice without making a compromise. But having said that, some examples do stand out with low mileage, great spec, and equally unmissable condition. And this 1989 Mercedes-Benz 500 SL appears to be one such car. It's available with us at SLSHOP, and comes backed by years of experience in maintaining and dealing with Mercedes-Benz cars.
