Description

Once Porsche hierarchy realised customers were unlikely to accept the demise of the 911, their all new 928 became a rather expensive addition to the range. Development costs had been high, a powerful 4. 7 water cooled V8 which was so good they cut it in half and gained a power unit for the 924. Smooth and flexible with endless torque, a true GT car with curvaceous styling that for 1986 featured front and rear spoilers, colour coded side mouldings and four piston brake system. These were limited to 155mph but could top 60mph in 6. 3 seconds and just under 40k were sold of which ‘How many are left’ claim 175 automatic S models are known in the UK.
At Country Classic Cars we find it’s best to present a detailed write up of any classic we are requested to sell, presenting both the good and bad aspects which can only be achieved after a full inspection. This helps to avoid ‘buyer’s remorse’ especially for those purchasing from abroad or interested parties travelling distances to view.

Our Stuggart 928 features model code G meaning 1986 model build and the original service book carries a comprehensive history although it is worth mentioning a long period of inactivity that occurred from 2003. We know from the vendor after 2020 the car visited at least two specialists where work was carried out, returning the car to full health. This included an engine rebuild plus air con compressor and exhaust, totalling just under £10k we can also confirm recent upper/ lower arms, brake caliper refurb, fresh trailing bushes and front sub frame has been powder coated. For some reason the 928 went back into storage as winter arrived in 2021 and remained there until recently, during which time the service pack was left venerable to some form of rodent (the owner is currently locating copies of invoices) who has eaten through much of the paperwork. Unfortunately, this additional period has resulted in the car requiring further investment by any future custodian and Country Classic Cars have compiled a report of areas for consideration. Much of this was rectified in our workshops enabling a fresh MOT to be obtained, further pointers are as follows.
The engine bay does not present to its potential, corrosion has attacked some smaller parts, flaking paint due to standing for long periods. Offside air intake ducting split, air con not working to full potential suspect leaking seals. Rear tyres are older and worn, alternator cooling duct split, small leak from sump with new gasket required. Offside door card slightly distorted, roof lining would benefit from resecuring taught and centre glove box internal lid damaged. Inner luggage cover damaged, tool kit corroded and spare wheel missing. As the images confirm this Porsche remains visually impressive and whilst many of the faults we note are so minor the camera lens fails to capture, nevertheless we mention the smallest of defects.
All the window scrapers are cracked due to age plus there are small scratches to the n/ s window glass and windscreen. Small areas of corrosion due to stone chips or paint defects were found on the front windscreen lower edge, in front of the n/ s door window, o/ s rear quarter window lower edge and n/ s lower wing. The o/ s body moulding trim is insecure plus slight damage to the rear ¼ lower body moulding and the front spoiler lower needs attention on the n/ s.
The interior is generally in great order, carpets offer limited wear as do the seat covers, just the vulnerable driver’s seat bolster showing slight evidence of entry/ exit contact. The dash plastics are secure with negligible wear whilst all the dials and gauges operated as they should, we are also pleased to confirm the display is minus any warning lights. Instant start up and excellent oil pressure that still offered the maximum ‘5’ as temps climbed. Slick ratio changes from the 4-speed automatic combine with smooth and quiet V8 that warns of its potential with the slightest of stabs onto the loud pedal. Its fair to comment we were surprised how well this 928 performs, even on tired rubber the handling exudes confidence, the ride is rattle free even on the worst surfaces.
Overall, this Porsche offers a lot of potential having enjoyed heavy investment in the recent past. Certainly, there are considerations (as we have listed) but we feel this classic is priced accordingly and will present any enthusiast the chance to experience one of Stuttgart’s finest Super GT’s at well under market rate.
