Buick's 50th Anniversary gift to itself, the Skylark, first displayed as a General Motors Motorama car in 1952, was introduced as a limited-production specialty convertible. Largely hand-built, the car joined the Oldsmobile 98 Fiesta and Cadillac Series 62 Eldorado as a celebration of GM's artisanship and design excellence. Of the three, the Skylark was the most successful with 1, 690 units produced, even though its base price was nearly double that of a standard Roadmaster convertible, the platform on which it was based on.
Nearly every standard production option came standard on the Skylark, and a 322ci 'Fireball' V8 and a twin-turbine 'Dyna-Flow' transmission was the only drivetrain on offer. Its easy to understand how enthusiasts and investors alike appreciate these vehicles for their rakish styling, impressive luxury, and, of course, their rarity. Today, these cars are the perfect choice for a night out on the town or a local car show. 1953 models are, in particular, some of the most collectible Buicks from this era, and perhaps the most noteworthy of the models to wear the 'Skylark' nameplate.
