EXTERIOR
The M3 CSL was available in only two colour variants, Black Sapphire Metallic and Silver Grey Metallic. This example is presented in the rarer and more sinister Black metallic paint which looks incredible alongside the lightweight carbon-fibre panels that define the M3 ‘Coupe Sport Lightweight’. Allied with a popular KW Coilover kit, the car sits just right whether at the kerb or on the move.
The metallic paintwork shows a bright sparkle alongside the signature carbon-fibre roof panel, front splitters and rear valance that show no signs of damage whatsoever. Shadow-line window trim and rubbers also remain in excellent order.
INTERIOR
Slipping into the lightweight sports seats the CSL interior is a beautifully minimal affair clad in Titan shadow trim, carbon fibre reinforced plastic and upholstered in Anthracite reflex cloth. The deeply bolstered bucket seats are firm and provide race car-like support; remaining supple, smooth and in excellent condition. AC is a welcome option although it’s always tempting to crack the electric windows to hear that six cylinder symphony.
The centre console remains free from scratches and damage, and retaining its factory limited edition plaque, while the lightweight theme continues to the scalloped door cards in yet more carbon composite.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Finished with the subtle and distinctive ‘M’ badge, the CSL’s 3. 2 litre, 24 valve, straight 6 engine looks a like a work of art with the impressive carbon fibre air intake emblazoned with the ‘BMW M Power’ stamp. The S54 provides layers of sound right throughout the rev range – a totally engaging journey via one of BMW’s finest naturally aspirated straight sixes. A Milltek exhaust amplifies things further without being intrusive at lower revs; this being the only non standard item across the engine / drivetrain.
Much has been made of the marriage between SMG and S54, we here find it an excellent combination and pleasingly the ‘box behaves as it should without any slack or hesitation.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The 19 inch lightweight alloy wheels help to set the CSL apart with an aggressive stance being 0. 5″ wider than standard M3 – all in excellent condition along with the BMW centre caps which remain free from any damage. Michelin’s on all four corners show plenty of tread depth.
Alcon brakes were selected as a a ‘CSL Cup’ kit and provide a welcome improvement in braking capability.
HISTORY FILE
This stunning Sapphire CSL was first registered by Holland Park Ltd in March of 2004, returning to the supplying dealer for it’s all important running-in service at 1, 046 miles the following month.
With 8 further stamps in the original service book, across both main dealer and established specialists, a multitude of invoices detail work carried out to the boot floor, gearbox and rear differential as well as a strip and service of the front KW Coilover kit with new oil and seals in March of 2022.
Over the last 2 years the car has received a glowing inspection report from the main dealer and has just returned from an Inspection II with Barons Hindhead. The book pack is complete with spare key and all paperwork from day one.
With some considered modifications, a thorough service record and superb MOT History this collectible modern classic is an excellent opportunity to drive and experience one of Munich’s finest Coupe Sport Lightweights.
