Volkswagen T2b Bay Window
50-year-old original matching numbers survivor, with 124. 000km kilometres.
Registered as museum vehicle here in Finland. Excellent preserved condition and looking for an owner that understands the value of conservation. An extremely good starting point for a restoration, but of course these types of cars should be just maintained and not remade. Not a new car of course, with age showing in the paint, but no rust. Very clean lines, doors and panels fit and close as they should, all original instrumentation and details. Everything works. Original paperwork still in its VW-folder. Three owner vehicle. First owner had the car for 40 years, the second for 6 years and has now been preserved by current owner for 4 years.
Minor repair work carried out over the years, using original VW-parts listed below.
First owner immediately treated the whole underside of the car with Dinitrol stone chip protection, so rust has never been an issue. The car was thoroughly cleaned periodically even on the underside. Dinitrol treatment has been redone a few years back. He also had rear skirts and one side repainted after minor rust spot removal +10 years ago. The slight colour variation is visible when looking thoroughly at the car.
Standard rust spots in the following areas have been repaired professionally by removal of rusted metal, weld, rust eater, epoxy base coat and correct orange paint:
Seat belt contact points in the cockpit and rear compartment
Cockpit/ rear area wall repair at seat belt area.
Side sill ends, around original service plugs
Cockpit drivers’ side and far side footwell
Rear hatch lower sides
Repair progress pictures are available.
Front and rear brakes total overhaul
Window washer valve and hoses replacement
Ignition lock electric part replacement
Engine parts cleaned, overhauled, and painted
Carburettor overhauled
Heater flaps thermostat replaced
Blaze-cut fire suppressing hose installed
A few issues concerning conservation/ repairs that could be addressed:
Dash had a starter button installed at some point when the ignition lock started malfunctioning. Original ignition was repaired, and button replaced with a USB-charging port.
Basketweave seat covers have been painted with vinyl paint, but are in need of touch up or restoration, including seat padding to become perfect.
Engine is leaking oil slightly and has never been restored. Runs and drives but would benefit from a complete lower block overhaul.
All in all, a very unique survivor, that would do well in the hands of a true enthusiast, that understands the value of such a vehicle.
