SUMMARY
This now very rare high specification Mercedes S124 230TE was originally supplied by Jackson's Mercedes St. Helier, and has spent the majority of its life in the milder climate of Jersey, in the custody of just one owner on the Island, before being brought over to the mainland in 2017. As such the bodywork and structure are in superb order. Also, in 2015 the car underwent major cylinder head work including timing chain, valves and a replacement head gasket, so that’s the main mechanical concern of the M102 engine already covered, and one less thing to worry about in the future.
Since 2017, It’s now had just three owners on the mainland, one being a Mercedes Club Member and retired engineer who doted on this car, and still regrets selling it. He did replace it with another W124 Estate after a year, but still misses this one.
This is a car I now know very well indeed, as I first came across it through one of my MB Club contacts in early 2021, during the later stages of the Pandemic. With some restrictions still in place, I chose to hang onto it for a while and didn’t actually sell it until 2022, when It was sold on 14th March at 63, 000 to an Optician from Lincoln, who kept it for two years, and covered just over 20, 000 miles in that time. During his tenure it was garaged, looked after properly, serviced on the dot and any issues that arose were dealt with properly by respected specialist; these including a rebuild of the fuel injection system and a further overhaul of the Aircon system. However, due to a change in circumstances, as he was setting up his own business, he decided to sell, and asked me in December 2023, if I was interested in buying it back, which I had no hesitation whatsoever in accepting, as cars like this don’t come ono the market often. I picked the car up from Lincoln two days before Christmas last year and drove it the 120 miles home; a drive, in very high winds; that challenging drive again reminded me just how good these cars are.
In the last few months, I’ve gone over this car with a fine tooth comb and addressed any other jobs that I felt needed attention; these jobs are listed further up this page. The car is now ready for the next stage of its life, whether that be as an occasional use classic or an everyday car; a task which its well capable of, the W124 Estate is probably one of the most practical cars ever made, and has the most usable load space of any estate car every made, with the exception of the Volvo 240 & 740. This is why the W124 Estate became a victim of its own success as many of these cars were abused and used as vans by tradesmen and antique dealers alike because of their unrivaled load (and people) lugging ability.
If you’re looking for one of these, you’ll soon realise decent W124’s Estates are getting rare these days, and to find an exceptional example with a specification like this is a real find. Most of these cars are now way past their best now, and the better ones that remain aren’t usually as well spec’d as this one. It’s also now widely accepted, and something specialists like me noticed years ago, that the pre-facelift W124’s are far superior in terms of quality to the later cars, and as a result are becoming very sought after.
So, if you’re in the market for what I think is the best Estate car ever made, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with this one.
MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES
MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon. Specialising in Classic Mercedes from the late 1970’s, through to the 2000’s, I also frequently have the odd foray into other quality classics and sometimes even modern cars, however the qualification is always that it has to be interesting, and/ or just a little different; my theory, which has served me well so far, is that if I like it, someone else probably will!
My main specialisation is the legendary Mercedes W201 190 and Mercedes W124; I firmly believe these models were about as good as cars got in terms of sheer, teutonic quality, and believe them to be the best cars Mercedes have ever made. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish. I also have extensive experience of the majority of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too
MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too. I’m also listed in the Mercedes Club Directory as a recommended business and I’ve also had several of my rarer cars featured in the motoring press too.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business.
