Just one former keeper since UK Registration – originally Danish Military. Sun Visors. Bonnet Mounted Spare. Previously sold by us in 2018. Rear Mud Flaps. Tow Ball and Electrics. Matching numbers & USA Exportable.

We are delighted to present for sale this LHD 1979 Series 3 Land Rover®, which we refurbished to order in 2018, for a client who kept it at its holiday home abroad. It is exceptionally rare for us to find a Series 3 LHD which was not built as a “CKD” by Santana – this one being built in the UK at Solihull for a Danish Military order.

Externally, this Series 3 has all the features you’d want to see – bonnet mounted spare, vintage number plates, tow ball and electrics to allow towing, larger defender style door mirrors for improved visibility, recent canvas, rear grab handles, rear mud flaps, etc etc. Those eagle eyed amongst you will notice the “Square” rear crossmember which is symptomatic of an ex-military Series 3 – mainly because these were strengthened to allow bumperettes to be fitted and allow easier towing or even air-lift. This colour scheme is also rare to see – and we think they look stunning in Limestone with colour coded wheels and sand canvas – we always do what we can to try and do them justice on photos…. it is something different and they prove popular when in stock, too.

On the inside, there are three standard front seats, along with deluxe matting to the footwells. The original client wanted to be able to listen to his own music, take calls and play sat nav directions through his stereo – and so opted for our uprated system with all these capabilities – they also have an AUX input and a USB charger, which is very handy for keeping a phone or small electronic devices charged up. The rear houses twin bench seats, meaning seating for seven people including the driver, with a load mat to the floor area to protect against scratches etc. Those with a keen eye for detail will notice that even though the vehicle is LHD, the red and yellow levers for high and low ratio, along with the 4WD remain in the original RHD footwell, and this was a deliberate design feature by Land Rover®… as the LHD footwell was slightly narrower than the RHD one!

Out on the road, this Series 3 drives just as it should – the diesel engine starts with minimal glow and the road biased tyres, along with free wheeling hubs, mean the best possible road manners in the period set up with superior economy, too. Diesels were often the preferred engine at this time as they avoided the “points and plugs” of original pre-fuel injected petrol engines… meaning once they’re running, they won’t stop for any reason other than running out of diesel.. that meant for long journeys, and military applications, they were chosen first – alongside superior torque for pulling trailers etc. The previous keeper has driven this car nearly 3000 miles on the continental roads without issue – often doing hundreds of miles at a time too – a seriously impressive achievement in a car of this age.

If you are an international client who is looking for a genuine, Solihull built Series 3 Land Rover® which is suitable for export to your country, then this is very much worth considering – it is fully USA exportable and being over 25 years old can be registered in any US State. We often get requests for specifically non-Santana variants – and this is often a very difficult ask as Land Rover® built very few LHD’s on site in the UK unless for government or military contracts…. we may only see a Series 3 like this every 3-5 years – and not in such complete condition – it took us almost a year to source this for our clients order several years ago! If you are a UK citizen with a holiday home in Europe (but you have a UK address) you are able to enjoy this Land Rover® for 90 days a year in Europe without going through the pain of re-registration… and as taxing and MOT exemption declarations can be done online…. it needs not be on our shores to make this work either!

In summary then, if you are looking for a Series 3 for either a holiday home, for holidays on the continent, to export to your home nation, or just a Series 3 that can carry the whole family in Britain in vintage cool, then this could be for you. With the added bonus of MOT & Tax Exemption, classic insurance, seating for seven and a stereo with speakers and hands free calling, it should prove to be a joy to own for the future.
