The Bentley Eight, produced from 1984 to 1992, was an entry-level version of the marque's Mulsanne derivative. Its distinguishing feature was a wire mesh grille, replacing the traditional vertical blades. Less equipped than the Mulsanne, it had a launch price of less than £50, 000, around £6, 000 less than its larger sibling. Its success led to an expansion of sales beyond the UK, reaching Europe and the U. S. At launch, the Eight was fitted with cloth upholstery, steel wheels and firmer suspension, slightly improving handling. In 1986, fuel injection and ABS were added, followed in 1987 by leather upholstery and electric memory seats. In 1990, an automatic ride height adjustment system was introduced, as well as catalytic converters, which were optional in the UK but already compulsory in other markets. Until the end of production, the Eight used a three-speed automatic gearbox, replaced by a four-speed transmission in August 1992. This model enabled Bentley to attract a wider customer base, while retaining the essence of the brand.
