VW T2a Early Bay "Cyril" – Fully Restored & Adventure-Ready-
Meet Cyril, a truly special 1971 VW T2a Early Bay with a rich history and a meticulous restoration. Originally leaving the Volkswagen factory in May 1971, Cyril was destined for Italy and is one of the last T2a Early Bays produced, benefiting from factory-fitted disc brakes for improved stopping power.
In 2009, during a European tour, Cyril arrived in the UK but soon found himself in need of a new home. The previous owner, facing difficult circumstances, reluctantly had to part ways with him. Rescued in Devon, Cyril was mechanically sound, but his bodywork and interior needed serious attention. With a non-original Nissan interior, numerous DIY modifications, and fading paintwork, it was clear that this classic camper deserved a complete transformation.
Entrusted to Ron at Endangered Species in Wiltshire, a full, back-to-metal restoration was carried out between 2010-2011, costing over £18, 000. This included extensive bodywork repairs, a fresh VW Savanna Beige respray, new upholstery, insulation, soundproofing, and a completely overhauled interior. Photographic records document the entire process, ensuring complete transparency of this camper’s journey back to its former glory.
Cyril’s interior is designed for maximum comfort and space, featuring a full-width rock 'n' roll bed with twin seat belts for both lounging and sleeping. Rather than a fitted kitchen, the layout prioritises day-use space, perfect for road trips, camping, and extended tours. A cooler is included to keep drinks chilled, making it an ideal setup for summer adventures.
Since his restoration, Cyril has been garaged when not in use and has only ever been driven during the summer months, ensuring he remains in outstanding condition. Displaying 12, 774 miles (Non-Verified), he has been well cared for and is ready for his next chapter.
