Description

1988 Maserati Biturbo Spyder 2. 8 manual. A unique proposition with an incredible 2, 670 miles covered in 37 years. Most probably the best example on sale, Worldwide.

The Biturbo debuted in December 1981 as a two-door coupé, with a 180bhp 2. 0-litre twin-turbo engine. Available with left-hand drive only, it was joined by the two-tone Biturbo S in 1984.

A Biturbo Spyder concept designed and produced by Italian coachbuilder Embo was shown at the 1982 Turin show, but the production Spyder that appeared in 1984 was designed and built by Zagato, with a wheelbase shortened by 11cm. Initially this featured a 2. 0-litre engine, upgraded to a 2. 5-litre engine for 1985.

The 192bhp 2. 5-litre Biturbo and 425 saloon reached the UK in 1986 with right-hand drive; the same year saw a choice of Weber-Marelli fuel injection or carburettors for the Italian market. The following year saw the demise of carburettors on Italian cars and in 1988 the UK followed suit. In the same year the 430 superseded the 425, with a 2. 8-litre engine – the 2. 8-litre 228 also arrived.

Supplied new by Maserati appointed dealer Grayshott Motor Company, Hindhead, Surrey on the 3rd November 1988 to its first owner residing in Guildford. Specified in Rosso Red with Beige Nuvalato Leather, additionally, optional Lattice spoke Alloy wheels were added.

The car was kept by the first owner for 14 years, the car being one of a collection of cherished, garaged cars and occasionally driven in fair weather. Despite its infrequent use, the car was correctly maintained, supported by invoices, safely kept in the cars history file. All pre-VOSA MOT’s are held in the file as follows:

July 1991 1, 013 miles
June 1993 1, 422 miles
August 1995 1, 488 miles
August 1996 1, 692 miles
August 1997 1, 800 miles
March 2000 2, 009 miles

In July 2002, the car was sold to a local businessman who bought the car to add to his collection, the car was MOT’d in August, the mileage being 2, 510 miles, prior to being carefully stored in a temperature controlled environment.

Some years later a decision was made to ship the car to his Villa near Marbella, prior to this a full health check was conducted and an MOT subsequently issued in May 2011, the mileage at this point being 2, 625 miles.

The car was carefully stored in the Villa garage and the intention was to use infrequently for trips to the local golf course. In fact it made only a handful of trips, barely covering 50 miles in the 13 years that followed. It is worth noting that the car still retains its one DVLA owner status and hasn’t been registered in Spain.

The car was repatriated in late 2024 and has had a thorough health check by a local Maserati specialists. All belts have been replaced along with a general recommissioning of all components where deemed necessary. The car was an absolute joy to work on due its incredibly untouched, unmolested and time warp condition, with the technician's feedback stating that the car was quite literally 'Museum standard'

In summary, this is a very special and unique proposition and will appeal to a collector looking for the very best example on sale.

An MOT will be issued pre-delivery.
