We are delighted to present for sale this 1980 Series 3, presented in LWB format with Truck Cab Roof & recent Exmoor Trim Sand Canvas. It is unusual for us to be able to find these in such “stock” condition – despite the demand for them – so if you are in the market for one of these, read on below!

Externally, as the photos show, this really is a handsome Series 3 109 – the Limestone colour scheme is rare to see, and coupled to the original galvanised cappings on the body and the recent canvas, she really is a sweet thing. There are loads of period features such as the front lamp guards, vintage number plates, rear grab handles, galvanised front bumper, 750 Avon Range Master tyres which fill the arches and extend the gearing, etc etc. There are also many upgrades for those wanting to use the vehicle for more modern intentions, such as the larger defender style mirrors for better visibility, the height adjustable tow bar with electrics, the side steps for easier entry to the cabin – etc etc.

Truck cabs are actually our preferred format at HQ – and moving to the interior allows us to explain why. Firstly, the front cabin is more secure, as it locks fully – handy for those wanting to keep themselves and their belongings safe. Secondly, the smaller cabin means a warmer cabin with less space to heat (making a huge difference on a cold winters day), and a quieter cabin due to less surfaces for any vibrations to reverberate around. In addition, for those wanting to carry loads you may not necessarily want to share your cabin with – such as logs, coal, hay, tools, dirty bikes after a blast in the forest, muddy dogs in the winter, etc etc – they are ideal…. every single one of our “shop trucks” is a truck cab for this reason!

So – onto this Series 3 inside – three front deluxe seats, with deluxe matting to the footwells, and a heater with demist. There are some extra creature comforts too – like the ability to charge phones and sat nav systems, or even a bluetooth speaker which one can pop into the dash. All the seats are belted too, which is a nice touch also. Even the truck cab roof has been previously professionally re-lined & a photo is on the advert so you can see for yourself. The rear houses a proper load mat which goes front to back and it is great to see the spare is exactly where it should be stowed from factory – often these mounts (or the wheel and tyre) are missing.

Out on the road, this Series 3 drives just as it should – we always find that 109 variants sit a little better at speed thanks to the longer wheel base and a more even distribution of the weight – particularly on those roads which have plenty of pot holes where we are situated! The petrol engine is a joy and the brakes are sharp, with lighter than usual steering too – nice to note. The Weber Carburettor along with the larger tyres mean both more power and a more relaxed cruise which is very welcome. Free Wheeling Hubs increase fuel economy to the best possible MPG & prevent diff wind up and axle wear.

Those reading this advert will note we are rather singing this Series 3’s praises – and that is because, in our opinion – this is the very best of versatile formats for work, or for play. We’ve seen people use these as mobile coffee shops, shooting trucks, for gardening businesses, flower transport, garden centre collections, trips to the cash and carry, recovery trucks (like the ones at Goodwood Revival!) – you name it – these can do it all and not break a sweat in the process. When one also considers these can be written off as a plant vehicle (if you have a company to purchase through) and are also deductible for corporation tax – they become an even more attractive prospect…. and we feel that in today’s market – they are currently undervalued for the options and freedoms they provide. With the added bonuses of MOT & Tax Exemption, Classic Insurances and the option to fit as many seats in the rear as you’d like – this old girl is ready for a new home where she’ll be as loved as she has been for the last 45 years!
