1957 was the "year of danger", not just for scooters. But for all two-wheelers over 50cc travelling in France. A licence to ride was introduced, pending the introduction of a driving licence, which was due to take effect on 1 April 1958. A 25% VAT rate applied to scooters and motorbikes, which were now considered luxury items. And as misfortune never comes on its own, insurance rates were made compulsory and increased considerably. It was against this backdrop that the last Motobécane scooter of the era arrived on the market: the SBS. Marketed under the SVS reference by Motoconfort, the new Moby had a few mechanical differences from its predecessor, the SBH: a new piston, this time with 3 rings, was articulated to the connecting rod using a needle cage instead of a bronze ring. The gear locking system was modified, and the exhaust inlet and outlet tubes could now be dismantled to facilitate descaling. The Moby had always been prone to vibrations. Flexibloc rubber bushes at the powertrain joints have solved the problem. As for the bodywork, very little has changed, and buyers can now choose between two colours: ivory or grey-blue. A very nice, elegant scooter. To be serviced
