The fourth generation of the Quattroporte was launched in the UK in 1996, a year after the Italian market car, and was the first great event of the new ‘Fiat era’ of Maserati ownership. While based on an extended Ghibli II floorpan, the body was all new and styled by Marcello Gandini. It was elegant and understated in the traditional Maserati way, but the trademark Gandini ‘kink’ rear wheelarch shape hinted at the performance that was available.

The engine for UK-bound cars was the 2790cc V6 also derived from the Ghibli. This four-cam jewel was a descendant of the original Biturbo and in this form produced 284 bhp at 6000 rpm with 422 Nm of torque at just 3500 rpm. It was available with either a Getrag 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed ZF automatic. The top speed was quoted as 158 mph for the automatic version with 0-60 mph in less than 6 seconds.

Between 1996 and 1999, around 100 examples were imported to the UK, including this example in 1999. It was first registered on Jersey in February that year and remained there with it’s first owner until August 2004, when it was sold to the Bristol area. The mileage by then was 16500. In October 2006 it changed hands again and then once more, to the last private owner, in September 2007. It had amassed a comprehensive service history by then and had covered just under 40000 miles.

It first arrived at McGrath Maserati in November that year for a service and then periodically has been serviced by us ever since. Over the next ten years the Quattroporte was used sparingly by its Maserati enthusiast owner, for some of that time sharing garage space with a Quattroporte V, and covered only 4000 miles.

In June 2017, we carried out a comprehensive service at 44068 miles but since then it has mostly been stored and recently, we acquired the car. Today the mileage is 44300.

Since acquisition, we have carried out another thorough service, including a further cambelt change and with a fresh MOT, the car is now fully functioning and ready for a new owner.

It remains one of the most original and well-preserved Quattroportes we have seen for a very long time. The interior in particular is as fresh as it was when new. A real timewarp. The exterior has a few age-related marks but overall is in excellent condition and the underside is healthy.

The QPIV got a mixed reaction when new from the BMW and Mercedes set, who didn’t understand it’s eccentricities. But as a classic in the true Maserati tradition, it makes a lot of sense and is a very practical choice, especially in this kind of condition and with full history.
