1999 Rover Mini Cooper Sportspack - The Iconic Rover Metallic Tahiti Blue x Old English White

Available this week, this Mini is currently in our workshop awaiting a full check over and new parts.

The ultimate factory specification of Mini, the most powerful and reliable, the safest and most useable on modern roads, it was more luxurious and higher quality, it cost over 60% more to purchase than the previous years model because it was so heavily upgraded.

This is a beautiful and restored example with new British Motor Corporation Heritage panel-work and a recently rebuilt gearbox (Mini Technique), it has a rebuilt performance specification engine, and it is generally highly upgraded, both from the factory and post-production. She is supplied comprehensively serviced by a specialist (engine and gearbox, brakes and coolant) with 12 months MOT, new tyres and new brakes. Historic maintenance is comprehensive, she has a full history from new (XL folder).

(a) Restored

Restored with new chrome-work and British Motor Heritage panel-work, thicker steel, made from the original tooling, a super fit, you don’t have to worry about the usual rust.

Rebuilding her gearbox just 2000 miles previously, Mini Technique Mini Specialists ensure you also don’t have to worry about the standard gear-box wear.

Upgrading and rebuilding her engine just 20, 000 miles previously, she now has a fast-road specification, more power unlocked within the higher rev range, a terrific and/ or terrifying drive.

(b) Maintained

Displaying a full history from new, XL folders, many Mini Specialists and maintenance without consideration of cost. This includes every tax-disc from new, her original book-pack and both sets of keys and Lucas fobs.

We, a classic Mini Specialist, have comprehensively serviced her engine and gearbox, cooling system and brakes. Her brakes include recently new discs, pads and callipers, her discs are to a drilled and grooved specification, the Callipers are AP, surrounded by brand new Yokohama premium specification tyres. We have fitted a new Mini Sport Long Centre Branch Manifold attached to her stainless Play Mini exhaust. Whilst doing this, we have fitted a new oxygen sensor, a job we have known other specialists charge as much as £500 for. She is supplied with 12 months MOT and no advisories, HPI clear.

Mini enthusiasts will appreciate the importance of new window seals and a new windscreen, without the often water ingress and/ or windscreen scratches, sending your eyes. They would also appreciate her brand-new Burr-Walnut dashboard, without the usual lacquer peel.(c) Upgraded

Increasing the original purchase-price by approximately 25%, she has the factory additional-extra Sportspack, the full black leather seats, walnut door cappings and alloy door handles. The Sportspack became iconic, encapsulating that extra-ordinary nineties width-to-height ratio, the boxiness and bigger wheels, finished with extra gauges and spotlights.

The interior included factory-fitted rear seat-belts, opening rear windows and extended front-seat brackets and an adjustable steering column for extra leg-room. She has a Sony sound system, albeit this is AUX only and you could upgrade to Bluetooth for £100.

Post-production she was fitted with a Mini-Sport Fast-Road Cam-shaft, the Mini-Sport Power-Boost fuel valve and the K&N induction system, ramping up her power. She was then fitted with a Play-Mini large-bore stainless exhaust with a new Fletcher stainless LCB, giving you that sixties roar and exceptional gas-flow and power delivery,

Finished with an aluminium sump guard, because its cool.

Exceptional Condition

Exceptional condition. What to note? The coachwork is beautiful, some small marks, but nothing significant. The Burr-Walnut door capping's have some cracks, but they have such an irreplaceable period finish that you likely wouldn’t replace them. She has the usual classic Mini minor oil leak, it’s just in the engineering, we’ve stopped chasing them.

History

Supplied as a demonstrated to Caffyns PLC of Sussex, 20 July 1999, Britney Spears and S Club 7 would have been on the radio, Star Wars Phantom Menace 1 and Austin Powers were in the cinemas, the new owners would have been looking forward to the Millennium. She has a full XL history folder documenting her life since.

The Ultimate Specification

The Mini evolved in 1996. It wasn’t that the experience or style changed, everything just got better. You had more power and more reliability, actual safety and modern day usability. I have expanded upon these below.

(i) More Power

Driving 50% more horse-power than the 1000cc, 20% more horsepower than the standard 1275cc, these late Cooper engines with the MPI technology were the most powerful, which, when combined with minimal weight and that iconic, Monte Carlo rally winning classic Mini handling delivers a terrific and/ or terrifying drive.

(ii) More Reliability

The Mini was brought into the modern era, most of the renowned troublesome components were upgraded and made reliable, the carburettor and the coil, the distributor, the power generation system, as was the cooling systems, break-downs became no longer frequent, but rare.

(iii) More Safe

Transcending their sardines in a tin-can reputation, the Mini was claimed to be the safest small car on the road at the time, you now had air-bags, door-crash-beams, modern seatbelts and SRS, you and your family could feel safe.

(iv) More Useable

Things had changed since the original Mini was launched, for a start the M1 was built, and this model aimed to make the Mini not just more reliable, but more useable, a daily-driver, a commuter, keeping up with modern fast-road traffic, fourth gear was re-designed for motorways, third gear allowed slip road acceleration, cockpit road-noise was claimed to have been reduced by 50%, Mpg was increased, an almost bulletproof immobiliser was fitted. Everything became a bit more luxurious, better materials, the seats have bolsters, actual comfort.

The downsides to this model were gearbox wear (over time) and metal-work rust, however with the recent gearbox rebuild and Heritage specification restoration both of these issues have been fully addressed and you have nothing to worry about.
