Description

1953 Jowett Javelin PE De Luxe in excellent condition.
This Javelin is from the final series of production and was delivered to Russell’s Garage, Chatham on 12th January, 1953. It was sold to Mr Desmond Quinn and registered on 9th May, 1953.
Designed by Gerald Palmer, the Javelin was an advanced design with smooth flat flour engine, gear and pinion steering and torsion bar suspension. Bench seats and a four speed column change allowed for six people to be carried in comfort. The Javelin could be described as the English equivalent of the Lancia Aprilia as the two cars are so similar in concept and performance. Javelins achieved many competition successes including a class win in the 1949 Spa 24 Hours.
Driving a Javelin is a revelation; they possess the finest ride of any car I’ve driven and floats over bumps. The steering and handling are also first class and the hydraulic brakes pull the car up square. The flat four engine is willing and likes to rev making the whole package utterly delightful. Being a later model, hydraulic brakes are fitted all round.
The body is in excellent condition with all the doors opening and closing nicely with even shut lines.
Underneath the car is very good with no corrosion evident.
The interior is generally good with the biscuit leather seats and door cards in very nice condition. There are some minor repairs to the headling and the carpets could possibly be worth replacing. The walnut veneer dashboard is complete and all instruments are working.
The brightwork is in very good order and the hub caps are new.
Radial tyres and discreet direction indicators are fitted.
The car comes with a wealth of spares and paperwork plus workshop manuals and instruction books.
Originally black, the Javelin was repainted maroon in the 1990s – a Jowett colour which suits it well. The paint has recently been refinished.
A well known example, our Javelin has been used as a taxi at Goodwood Revival meetings.
Javelins have an enthusiastic following but good examples such as this are hard to find. They are well supported by the Jowett Car Club.
We will happily take an interesting vehicle in part exchange.
A video of the car can be viewed on the St Andrews Autos YouTube channel.
