We are delighted to present for sale this 1983 Land Rover Series 3, presented in Station Wagon Configuration with Safari Roof, in the Marine Blue colour scheme. It is becoming increasingly rare for us to find late Series 3s fitted with the sliding side windows and the original headliner, so it is good to see both survive on this truck.
Externally, as the photos show, there are a host of period features – the bonnet mounted spare, rear mud flaps, rear grab handles, 750 road biased tyres for both increased gearing and road holding, galvanised front bumper, original galvanised cappings, colour coded lamp surrounds – etc etc. It is good to see that there are some modern features too – such as the tow bar with modern electrics to allow towing should it be needed, the larger defender style door mirrors for increased visibility and the double rear step for better passenger access to the rear. Those with a keen eye will notice that this Series 3 is a largely original truck in regards to both the cappings and the paintwork – and we at HQ believe this is very much in keeping with this specific example, looking beautiful exactly how she is. The added bonus of the Safari Roof gives the bonus of sliding side windows and alpine lights, as well as the “twin skin” roof which all enthusiasts will recognise.
On the inside, there are two outer front high back seats with techno trim, along with a centre middle seat which gives seating for three at the front. Deluxe matting is fitted to the footwells, along with a high quality rubberised sound deadening kit which covers the bulkhead and transmission tunnel – this will not only protect against damage, but also makes for a much quieter cruising experience. Twin matching rear bench seats are fitted, bringing seating to seven people including the driver, with a load mat to the rear floor. What really sets these Station Wagons apart is how they feel for all passengers – not just the driver… the alpine lights and side windows make for a light and airy cabin, and make driving easier due to better visibility and blindspot monitoring – the whole vehicle locks as well, which is very handy should you be leaving her parked up.
Out on the road, the petrol engine is a joy to drive and thanks to a recent brake service, it stops well too. Free Wheeling Hubs give superior fuel economy as well as protection against axle wear and diff wind up. The larger tyres mean increased gearing which gives a more relaxing cruise – coupled to the sound deadening, you’ll struggle to find a period Series which would be quieter at normal road speeds – as well as further increasing fuel economy over standard through longer ratios. The road biased tread means a more compliant ride, as well as looking good in the arches – a matching bonnet mounted spare means a puncture can be easily dealt with if so required.
In summary then – if you are looking for a Series 3 Land Rover which can carry the whole family in Station Wagon comfort, whilst also benefitting from MOT and Tax Exemption (alongside classic insurance) then this has to be worth considering. With period looks on offer too – the public will very much enjoy your first foray into the village square.
