Description
HERE WE have a rare variant of the world famous Triumph Herald. It is the Herald 12/ 50 which was produced for a short period of time between 1963 and 1967. This is a late example, being registered in August 1967. Now, the 12/ 50 was virtually the "Herald GT" of its day. The basis Herald 1200 bhp of 39 was increased by almost 40 per cent to 51 bhp. Then disc brakes were added as standard, a full length Webasto sunroof was built into every one of them, there was a different fine-barred front grille and 12/ 50 badges. Wow, what a triumph for Triumph!
If you have never driven a 12/ 50, it is a totally different drive from the basic 1200. Well, so it ought to be. A 40 per cent increase in power was quite something then. This car goes like the clappers and is a joy to drive. It feels like you are driving a 1960s sports car.
She is extremely pretty in two-tone green, her colours being Conifer (the darker of the two) and Cactus. Indeed the majority of 12/ 50s were offered in two-tone paint arrangements. So there is another special feature to add to the above list.
Panels are very good and she looks to be straight and solid re. chassis and outriggers. Her red interior and wooden dash are also in great order and, in an attempt to show the fitness of the engine, I show a photo of the car nice and warm after a good run out and the oil pressure sitting at 75 psi at idle. Revving from that point can give you in excess of 80 psi!
A real head turner of a Herald, 12/ 50s as nice as this are rarely offered for sale.
