Description

THIS week's classic offering at Martin Howey Classics is a 1971 Jaguar XJ6 Series 1 - rare enough in its own right these days. This however is made even rarer by the fact that it is a 2. 8 with manual/ overdrive box. Finished in a delightful XJ6 colour of Sable (in my opinion!) and with contrasting tan leather, she is in super unrestored condition.

Largely stored for the past 25 years, she has put around 900 miles on the clock during that spell. Looking at old (ancient!) MoTs and history, I would suggest that the mileage reading of 57, 000 is correct. She is incredibly solid, and in all the usual XJ6 places too! Her floor and sills and underside are in excellent order and it looks to me as though the Sable paintwork is the orginal. There are areas where the factory primer can be seen beneath the colour. Some of this is one side of the bonnet but most spots crop up on the roof. None of the usual Jag problem areas such as around the headlights, the door bottoms and especially the bottoms of the A posts have fallen foul of rust and rot. The interior is a lovely place to be with excellent leather needing nothing more than "feeding."

Her engine is mega sweet, although there appears to be a slight blow coming from the front of the exhaust system. Oil pressure held up really well on my test drive and was still at 40 psi with the engine hot. Overdrive functions in 3rd and 4th with the switch on the top of the gear lever.

It is extremely difficult (or is is for me anyway at 71-years-old) to get my head around the fact that this oh so modern looking iconic Jaguar is now 54-years-old. Yes, I know. A large percentage of these early models didn't make it to the grand old age of ten!

I am delighted to have found her and I am sure her new owner will be equally as pleased to acquire an unrestored early example of this iconic marque. Bear in mind that she is largely original in my view and so some areas have surface imperfections to the paintwork. Overall however, an amazing survivor. Head cloth sags a little in the centre, as they do on Jags, and it could do with a little tidying to it around the rear window. Not bad cosmetic faults for a 54-year-old car!
