So often the definitive wish list car, the F40 is often regarded as the greatest Ferrari road car ever. It broke new technical boundaries to create an intoxicating driving experience and now sits among the must haves for any top-level collector.

The car’s gestation is a thing of legend and widely published so no need to cover that here. Suffice it to say that it was the last design personally approved by Enzo Ferrari.

Wild and unruly with a visceral side you just couldn’t get away with today, the F40’s mission was to pick up the baton from the already heroic 288 GTO and turn the volume up to 11. Taking the game to Porsche’s technological tour de force, the 959, this was the late ‘80s high octane arms race to deliver the world’s fastest car and in doing so, ensure automotive supremacy for Ferrari.

The Ferrari F40 remains an intimidating prospect over 30 years later. With a top speed of 201mph, 0-60 in 3. 8 seconds and 0-100 in under 10 seconds, it's a barely disguised, street-legal racing car.

Even with relatively modest power figures a “40” still feels fast today - partly a result of just how violently the turbos suddenly ramp-up the power, giving an intensity to the F40’s acceleration that catches the breath every time. Yet while it could have been overwhelming, it isn’t, the chassis seemingly dialled in to expect the savage delivery.

Whilst there is a brutality to the design, the technical delivery stems directly from Ferrari's F1 experience with composites; it's a plastic tub, bonded to a tubular steel chassis for an immensely rigid structure. The doors, bonnet and other removable panels are all lightweight carbon fibre.
The interior is famously spartan. No leather, no carpets, no radio, not even a door handle – all in the pursuit of weight loss and the inherent performance benefits they brought.

The thunderous 478bhp twin-turbocharged, 2936cc V8 can generate 426lb ft torque, all driven through a 5-speed transaxle. It's a bulletproof setup that can reward a skilled driver with fastest time at any track day.
The F40 mixes the rarity of a classic Ferrari with truly up-to-date supercar performance.

And as the often quoted line says “like maturing Bordeaux, the F40 gets better and better 'in the bottle', while the opportunity to lay down an example in many people's garage is receding as fast as the reflection in an F40's rear mirror”
