1959 MGA Roadster with MGB engine & 5 Speed gearbox

The MGA was launched to considerable acclaim in 1955, taking MG to the forefront of modern sports car design with its sleek, curvaceous styling.

Powered by the BMC ‘B’ Series engine with twin SU carburettors, the earliest cars developed 68 bhp. This was soon increased to 72 bhp, giving the MGA a respectable maximum speed of close to 100 mph. Lockheed hydraulic brakes were fitted and, overall, the MGA proved to be a highly attractive model with wide appeal. A fixed-head coupé version was also offered and, as with previous MGs, it became immensely popular in the USA. Many MGAs were also exported to Rhodesia and the Antipodes.

In May 1959, the MGA underwent a series of revisions. These included a more powerful 1588cc engine developing 79. 5 bhp, together with the adoption of front disc brakes. For added safety, the rear lamps and indicators were separated into individual units. ‘1600’ badges adorned the boot lid and the vents beside the bonnet. A limited number of ‘1600 De Luxe’ models were also built, utilising the redundant Twin Cam chassis components, including Dunlop disc brakes and distinctive knock-on wheels.

The final evolution of the MGA arrived in 1961 with the introduction of the 1600 Mk II. This version featured a 1622cc ‘B’ Series engine, along with subtle revisions to the radiator grille and horizontally mounted tail lamps sourced from the Mini.

In total, approximately 101, 400 MGAs of all series were produced before production ceased in July 1962, when its successor, the MGB, made its debut.

This 1959 example of the MGA Roadster was imported from the USA in 1993 and underwent considerable work including conversion to RHD format.  It has a most comprehensive specification including MGB engine to 'fast road' specification, 5 speed gearbox conversion by Hi-Gear Engineering, brake servo, kenlowe fan, hi-torque starter motor, spax rear shock absorbers, chrome wire wheels.  A full list is available.
