1983 HONDA XR500R ‘Pro-Link’
Fresh engine rebuild
Collectors item
The Honda XR500R (1981–1984) is a classic 498 cc air-cooled four-stroke single-cylinder enduro bike. It evolved from the earlier XR500 (1979–1980) and became one of Honda’s first big “thumpers” built for serious off-road racing and trail use.
Key highlights include a punchy engine with reed-valve induction (later models), a tough steel frame, and the groundbreaking Pro-Link rear suspension
Why they’re sought after today:
• Racing legend: Dominated desert races, enduros, and cross-country events in the ’80s with riders like Johnny Campbell and Scott Summers. It proved four-strokes could hang with two-strokes.
• Vintage appeal: Raw, simple, bulletproof Honda reliability with no electronics — perfect for trail riding or full restorations. Parts are still reasonably available.
• Collector value: Clean Pro-Link examples are climbing in price. Some advertised for €6000+
In short, it’s the bike that started the modern big-bore four-stroke off-road revolution — tough, fun, and increasingly rare.
