Description
This stunning 1971, Lamborghini Orange Fiat 500 F was the 3rd generation of Dante Giacosa’s famous design. Sitting between the Lusso (’L’) and earlier D variants, the F is praised for its purity, keeping in tune with the original design but mechanically more similar to the L. The Fiat 500 is still one of Italy’s most famous and iconic cars. Nothing quite emulates the dolce vita and Italian driving temperament like the Fiat 500. Its intuitive driving experience is nothing short of engaging, and the car has great character.
The ‘Classic’ Fiat 500 followed on from the Fiat Topolino. The Topolino was designed in 1936 as an economy car to get the people of Italy moving, but by 1955, the design was outdated. The Fiat 500 shared many of the technological improvements of the Fiat 600, most notably unibody construction and a rear-engine layout, albeit in a more compact package. Dante Giacosa designed the new car and was tasked to use as little sheet metal as possible; as a result, all Classic 500s included a canvas sunroof. This was not an option but fitted as standard to save weight and cost. The Fiat 500 F was the 3rd generation of car featuring a slightly shortened roof from the original.
This lovely example was imported into the UK in 2013, the car was originally in black and until it was bought by its current owner in 2016, who casually remarked to the dealer how he liked it, but it would be better in Lamborghini Orange. The car was subsequently repainted in this stunning colour of Arancio Ishtar, also receiving a new engine at this time. The car has been in our care since 2021 and has been stored at our facility and maintained by our workshop, receiving a full restoration, servicing work and both a top and bottom engine rebuild.
No car quite captures the ‘Dolce Vita’ and Italian driving temperament like a classic Fiat 500, particularly on a sunny day with the canvas roof down. The driving experience is best described as engaging and immersive. With a peppy 499cc twin-cylinder engine, it is by no means fast, but their small size and direct connection to the road makes them great fun to drive. The suspension setup, derived from the Fiat 600, features front transverse leaf springs and wishbones, providing both durability and impressive road holding, while the rear uses independent semi-trailing arms. The stressed uni-body construction was revolutionary for its time, when most cars still used a separate chassis. The 4-speed gearbox is great fun to use, with no synchromesh. With their small size, any road becomes a race track and every journey an experience!
The car comes with a full history from its time in the UK and a spare wheel.
