The E34 M5 sits at a very particular point in BMW history. The end of the hand-built era, before things became faster, heavier, and more digital. Every car finished by BMW Motorsport in Garching, every engine assembled the old way. It’s the last of its kind, and people are finally catching on.
This one is a little more interesting than most. A 1992 car, originally supplied in Germany and imported to the UK in 2015, it represents a brief crossover moment in M5 production. What you’re looking at is a pre-facelift shell paired with the later 3. 8-litre S38 engine, a combination only offered for a short window before the full facelift arrived. In other words: the sharper, cleaner early body, with the more powerful later drivetrain. If you know, you know.
Finished in Daytona Violet, it’s exactly the sort of colour that defines the era. Deep, rich, and unmistakably ‘90s BMW Individual thinking. It suits the car perfectly especially when paired with the more understated lines of the pre-facelift body. The paint is entirely original, and while it shows its age in places, that honesty is part of the appeal. It hasn’t been restored, hidden or overdone. Just used.
Inside, it’s properly specified. Sports seats with armrests, heated and memory-adjustable, rear and side sun blinds, and the all-important Heckblende at the rear - small details, but the sort that matter on these. It’s a car that feels complete, not pieced together.
Mechanically, it’s exactly what you want. Sorted, and clearly maintained with use in mind rather than storage. The history file backs that up: from its original German registration documents through to its UK registration in 2015, along with invoices and MOT records since. There’s evidence of routine upkeep, including ignition components, fluids, filters, and more recent general maintenance to keep things operating as they should.
In the same ownership since import in 2015, it’s a good, honest car. One you can use properly. One you don’t feel guilty about driving. And if you wanted to take it to the next level, the foundations are all there: original paint, straight panels, correct spec. But equally, you might decide not to. Cars like this are increasingly rare precisely because so many have been fettled with.
The E34 M5 has always been a bit of a connoisseur’s choice. Less obvious than an E28, less shouty than an E60, but arguably the sweet spot. Hydraulic steering, a proper manual gearbox, and an engine that rewards being worked for its performance.
This one just adds an extra layer to that story. A rare specification, a great colour, and the right kind of ownership history. Not perfect but all the better for it.
