Description
Introduced as a limited-edition model of the Silver Spur III (all long wheel base) for the 1995 model year, the Rolls-Royce Flying Spur was the very first Rolls-Royce to be fitted with a turbocharged engine.
It is powered by a turbocharged 6. 75-litre V8 from the Bentley Turbo R, delivering 360bhp and 552lb-ft of torque (the world’s torquiest engine at the time) to the rear wheels, through a four-speed automatic transmission. It also featured stiffer springs, dampers and anti-roll bars.
The Flying Spur itself is very rare, with just 134 built worldwide, before production ended in 1995. However, this example is rarer still, being one of only three examples of the "Jack Barclay Special" , a dealer limited edition with unique features and the only one with a numbered plaque on the centre console.
The unique features included:
- A Sandstone Beige interior, with Bird’s Eye Maple wood veneers across dashboard;
- Centre console, door caps and rear picnic tables;
- A smaller ‘limousine style’ rear window for privacy;
- Twin headlights;
- Jack Barclay emblems on the B-pillars, and
- ‘Flying Spur’ motifs on all sill plates.
It rides on a set of 16-inch wheels, with OEM spec Avon CR227 tyres. The specification also includes air conditioning, cruise control, electric windows, heated and electrically adjustable front seats with memory, electrically adjustable rear seats and a stereo with CD changer.
The car comes with its owner’s handbook and service book, showing 17 stamps up until 59K, with further service and maintenance invoices in the documents file, all evidencing the car has been well looked after over its lifetime.
As a very rare limited edition, it manages to combine the opulence expected from a Rolls-Royce, with the performance associated with Bentley. As such, the Flying Spur especially in Jack Barclay Special guise, offers not just exclusivity, but also the best aspects of both brands for the discerning enthusiast or collector alike.
