Description
The Mercedes-Benz R129 is widely regarded as one of the finest grand touring roadsters ever built. Combining timeless styling, outstanding build quality and the legendary M119 V8 engine, the 500 SL has become one of the most sought-after modern classics. Well-preserved, low-mileage examples with documented ownership history are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
Offered here is an exceptionally original Mercedes-Benz 500 SL, built in December 1989 and delivered new in January 1990 to its first owner in the Hanover area of Germany.
After six years of ownership, the car was sold in 1996 through a Brabus dealership to its second owner, who retained it until 2009. The current owner then acquired the vehicle and cherished it until his passing in 2025. The car is now being offered for sale on behalf of his heirs.
Over a period of more than 36 years, this 500 SL has covered just 53, 700 kilometres. The original Mercedes-Benz service booklet documents the mileage up to 2009. From that point onwards, a complete file of Mercedes-Benz workshop invoices accompanies the car, providing uninterrupted documentation of its mileage and maintenance history through to the present day. Throughout his ownership, the last owner entrusted all servicing and repair work exclusively to Mercedes-Benz Düsseldorf.
Following approximately one year of storage in a dry garage after the owner's passing, the car received a comprehensive mechanical service in July 2026. All fluids were replaced, new spark plugs and filters installed, the timing belt renewed, rear axle seals replaced, a transmission oil flush carried out and new wiper blades fitted. As a result, the car presents itself in outstanding mechanical condition and is ready to be enjoyed immediately.
Cosmetically, this R129 is equally impressive. The vehicle remains largely in its original paint, with only the two rear quarter panels having been professionally refinished many years ago following minor cosmetic damage. Its elegant colour combination of dark blue metallic paintwork over a beige leather interior perfectly complements the timeless design of the R129 and gives the car a particularly sophisticated appearance.
The specification reflects the status of the flagship V8 model and includes electrically adjustable seats with memory function, heated seats, automatic climate control, the original factory hardtop finished in body colour, a wind deflector and the original Mercedes-Benz fire extinguisher. The beautifully preserved interior further underlines the exceptional care this vehicle has received throughout its life.
Particularly noteworthy is the extensive documentation accompanying the car. Included are the original first German registration document, the original Mercedes-Benz service booklet, every available Mercedes-Benz workshop invoice from recent decades, TÜV inspection reports and numerous additional records. Together they provide an exceptionally comprehensive and virtually uninterrupted history, rarely encountered on an R129 today.
This Mercedes-Benz 500 SL stands out not only for its remarkably low mileage but also for its originality, impeccable provenance and outstanding level of documentation. Opportunities to acquire an early German-delivered R129 of this quality have become increasingly rare, making this a highly desirable example for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
