Description
1923 Sunbeam 14/ 40 Tourer
Chassis number: 5895DC
Registration number: PD8076
A car with an extraordinary history having been off the road for decades. The car was first registered & used in 1923 before being laid up in 1928 with just 10, 000 miles recorded & put on blocks. It was briefly taxed for one day in 1933 for one day, presumably whilst the car was being moved. It then lay dormant until 1961 when it was discovered & purchased by the second owner. He undertook assorted extended works to the car returning it to the road in 1988.
The third owner purchased it in 2003 at which time it had just 12, 149 miles on the clock. Several years ago we handled its sale to the fourth owner who increased the mileage covered to 17546 miles. Under his tenure some useful modern modifications were performed such as fitting indicators, stop lights & flashers with a view to safety. The car has been fully serviced & is ready to go.
This car simply has to be driven to appreciate how good & tight it is. The steering has no play whatsoever in it. The three-speed gear box is wear free & simplicity in itself to master once one has become accustomed to its reverse H layout when compared to the modern norms. The 2. 2-litre engine is smooth as can be & pulls very strongly allowing easy cruising up to 45mph or so. Oil pressure is steady at 25 PSI. An Auster screen protects the rear passengers. The original black buttoned leather is found to the front & rear seats. It is taut, tight & has none of the sloppiness & rattles one finds on cars that have covered high mileages.
The history file is extensive & very well worth reading. A helpful notes file comes with the car as does a reprinted manual & a large assortment of bills. Being a 1923 model if benefits from having brakes on the front as well as the rear wheels allowing it to pull up sharply. The car compares very very favorably to a similar Rolls Royce 20hp & is of course far rarer with a delightfully vintage feel & appearance to it. The car is without doubt, one of the best Sunbeams we have handled.
