Art on wheels – a superb original S in a wicked and rare colour combination.
History
This is a believed genuine low-mileage second series car finished in Nero over Rosso Scuro. A true S model, also optioned with a state-of-the-art Voxson Sebring radio, electric windows and special hubcaps, this car was registered new in Rome on 03/ 07/ 1967, where it stayed for some 40 years under the hand of its first owner who sparingly drove the car, as one rarely needs to living in the heart of the historic center of the capital.
In 2008 the car was sold to its second owner in Agrigento, Sicily, who rotated the car in his collection using it for events and some long distance journeys, maintaining it appropriately. We bought it earlier this year from the second owner and have enjoyed pootling about in this particularly cool car.
UK registered and MoT until May 2018.
Body
The original black paintwork was refreshed around 15 years ago, and today the paint presents tidily with a good luster and some age related marks and blemishes present. Patina it has in spades.
All the intricate handmade pieces of stainless steel trim are there and are in excellent condition, ditto the glass. Panel fit is very good all round, the chrome is original with some pickling.
The chassis is rock-solid, and barring one outrigger which at one time has been incorrectly jacked, is completely straight with no obvious signs of any previous accident or rust repair. We have Dinitrol cavity injected the car to preserve this structure.
Mechanicals
This car is mechanically strong having never been off the road for a long period of time. To make the car event reliable, the second owner told us he conducted a top engine rebuild and did further works to the brakes and suspension, together with replacing the tyres and overhauling the fuel and cooling systems.
The Lampredi engine sounds fantastic and the unit in our car pulls well with very little smoke. We have tuned the carbs and changed the plugs, oil and filter. The four-speed box works well with no issues.
Interior
The stand out feature of this car is the hedonistic claret interior, which is all original and magnificently preserved – note the factory plastic wrapping still present on the inner front panel! The dash top has a minor crack and the wooden fascia has delaminated in places over time, which would be an easy repair if the new owner so wishes.
Boot
Very original with spare and jack present, including the often missing battery cover.
Summary
Faster than a Flaminia or 2600 Sprint and rarer than a Dino Coupe and even cooler, these underappreciated cars are great to drive and own and look like nothing else.
