Trident manufactured sports cars between 1966 and 1974 and then again between 1976 and 1978. The Trident Clipper V8 was originally intended to be TVR's top of the range model and was to be called the TVR Trident, featuring in early TVR brochures and adverts. The Clipper was powered by the Ford Cobra V8 engine and the body was styled by English designer Trevor Fiore (who was later Director of Design for Citroen). Performance was startling fast with 0-60mph in 5 seconds and 150mph. In addition to the Clipper, other models included the Ventura V6 using the Ford Essex engine and the Tycoon fitted with a TR6 engine, both of which lacked the Clipper’s raw power and performance. TVR's financial difficulties led to the Trident project being taken over by TVR dealer William Last and creating the Trident Car Company. A total of 130 Tridents were manufactured, 39 Clippers, 84 Venturas and 7 Tycoons making this a very rare marque indeed. (Acknowledgement to Historics at Brooklands for this description).
This car used to belong to the late Ken Morgan and was completely renovated some 20 years age and has been little used since. During restoration it generated significant interest and was instrumental in the formation of the Trident Car Club with Mr Morgan as one of the founder members.
Before my ownership the car previously changed hands four years prior at a price believed to be in the region of £50k since when it has spent most of its time in storage, thankfully heated.
The original restoration of the car received a lot of time and money, improving an already fast and superbly handling car. Most notable is the re-profiling of the front end and bonnet, all done to a superb standard. The engine is the original 4. 7 litre Ford V8 289 HIPO mated to the T10 top loader gearbox.
I acquired this fine car together with a couple of others as part of a package from a collector who has transferred his affection to another marque. Unfortunately I don’t have the room or facilities to properly store them all so this one is reluctantly offered for sale.
During storage the car suffered from the usual hangar rash so I have had the car repainted and recommissioned for the road which has included an overhaul of the braking and cooling and clutch systems.
The car has an MOT to January 2019.
If you want a Clipper then this is probably the one to have. Given its previous ownership and provenance it is a very unique and historic car.
