For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover® Series 1 86" in Deep Bronze Green (1956)

Petrol 2L. New Galvanised Bulkhead. Fully reworked chassis. Many new parts used in recent restoration. MOT EXEMPT and TAX EXEMPT subject to submitting the relevant paperwork to the DVLA.

Here for sale, we have a part exchange vehicle, which we are selling through Ebay, advertised as a project with no warranty implied or given, due to its age and the jobs which are outstanding.... please read on to find out what it requires! (we just don't have the time for it, and already have a good stock of Series 1s prepared for sale)

Firstly, there is only an old, but complete V5, so when you register it into your name you will need to submit this to get a modern style registration document. It's currently PLG so to gain tax exemption you will need to apply for this, to the DVLA. There is an old MOT from 1981 showing it was in Aberdeen. This is all the paperwork we have for it - not particularly unusual. We are not selling this vehicle with an MOT as it's being sold as a project, but if you read on you will realise that if you wished to procure one, we doubt it would be an issue.

This vehicle, from what we have gleened from looking at it and talking to the previous owner has had A LOT of time and money spent on it. The chassis is lovely, as the photos show. It looks this good throughout and has been carefully repaired and painted before the vehicle was re-assembled..... the rear crossmember has a sound but slightly unsightly patch, which is in no way a reflection of the rest of the vehicle.
The bulkhead is BRAND NEW and galvanised, bought at great expense! Looking around the vehicle, it is obvious that much good work has been done, in adding new parts where required..... most noticeable perhaps in the engine bay where there appears to be lots of new parts fitted to the clean engine.... the carb looks new, and it has been recently re-wired etc etc..... so it starts first time, and runs with a very low tickover. The troublesome fuel pump looks new too, so no problems there. The fuel tank is brand new too (very expensive). The whole underside is very clean and looks freshly assembled, this perhaps being the forte of this 86".

It drives really well, and has lots of power and urgency to get the speedometer cranked to the right..... and it's nice to see the speedo working. All lights and indicators work, and things like the horn and wiper too. The fuel gauge is broken, but as one fills the tank by looking into it under the seat, it hardly matters. The tyres are all new, and the brakes feel sharp, and the steering direct - it's nice to drive (for a series 1!). There's some noise from the thrust bearing which is common, and generally quietens down with use, but the clutch works as it should and the gearbox is all fine.

The bodywork looks better in the photos than in real life which is always the case. It's serviceable, but please don't think its of Rolls Royce standard, because it isnt! The galvanised cappings are all original though, so that's nice, and with only 4 former keepers, it's not been around too much.

The front has three good seats, and the rear twin benches with side windows in the hard top so it can take the whole family out. The hard top is quite unusual now, so it's nice to see that, and there's a catflap and drop down tailgate should you prefer it to be so!

So what does it need? Well, the underside and general solidity of this vehicle stand it apart from most - but it could be lovely with a respray and some of dents filled. The driver's door top gapes a bit at the top of the door, due to a small crack where the door and door top meet.... a simple weld here would improve that and stop the gap where the door top meets the roof..... many would leave it, as they leak from everywhere anyway when it rains! The door seals could all do with replacement, as they are tired. And that's about it.
