Listed here is my very much loved Toyota Hilux Surf SSR-X 3. 0 Litre Turbo Diesel.
A good example of a 2nd Generation Surf, with the better sought 3 Litre engine. Cherished and pampered just like all my Toyota collection. I have a 1988/ 89 Celica, 2005 RAV 4 Diesel 3 Door, and previously owned a Land Cruiser BJ40. So I hope you understand my love for Toyotas.
Without any compromise in price, to search for a Hilux Surf in this condition did take some years. I wanted a Toyota 3. 0 Litre Turbo Diesel engine, automatic transmission, with the right colour matching wide fenders, electric sunroof, and inclinometer. I have owned it for over 3 years and spent without giving a second thought for its current condition and the longevity this work to the owner. Remember, you buy cheap you buy twice.

This beast is ready for any terrain adventure. Last year in Christmas, the longest journey made with this Hilux Surf, I travelled with family to Southern France (Toulouse) for 2 weeks. Not a single problem! Only disappointed by toll charges after every few miles. I still have French toll charge receipts, Dartford crossing bridge, and Eurotunnel receipt.
Some key points to note:
- It has done Under 115, 000 genuine miles. When I bought it in 2014, it had 108, 000 miles on clock. Not much driven as you may realise
- Long MOT with no advisories until 20th June 2018 (All previous MOT certificates available).
- Comes with 1 key
- Factory fitted immobiliser
- Factory fitted Inclinometer, and Altimeter (calibrated myself)
- Working aerial and double din CD player. I use a quality FM transmitter and have no problems with MP3 files
- Everything is in working order in this car: Open tail gate warning, Over Drive, Idle up, Working rear washer and wiper, No issues with rear window opening with switch or key, Rear defogger, ECT, 4 wheel drive works with no problems, on a touch of a switch
- Never towed since I bought it, or any sign or wear in the rear suspension system
- It is very cheap on insurance. I pay less than £100 per year
- Dry stored in a garage
- Body in excellent condition for its age. Bodywork is arrow straight
- Rust free chassis and wax oiled underneath
- All round matching smoked window visors (these window visors are much underrated addition and benefits are great, not just visually)
- All suspension bushes in good order with no play.
- No evidence of off road usage, no mud in any panel or crevice, engine bay is factory painted – no mud, no much, just clean
- Never used spare wheel on the rear fold-out caddy
- No oil leaks underneath the car or any nasty surprises
- Total dependable vehicle that starts on the first turn of the key every time. Usual winter pack extras of strong twin Genuine Toyota batteries, AC and heater. The AC works nice and ice cold and so does the heater (front and rear)

During in my possession, the following work has been carried out:
- Steam cleaned and Undersealed
- Timing belt kit fitted
- New steering stops (stop clunking noise when cornering on full turn)
- New pair of rear fog lights fitted
- New pair of additional reversing lights
- New radiator
- New water pump
- New anti-roll bar bushes
- New cam belt kit
- New front Pioneer Dual cone speakers
- New Dunlop Grandtrek AT3 tyres with outlined with lettering (the protective blue surface still not washed off). Correctly wheel balanced and aligned to Toyota specifications. Also done a 1000 mile check.
- New white steel rims (ET -25 for 15 x 8)
- New wheel nuts
- New TRW front lower ball joints
- New inner CV boot boot and clips
- New Pagid front pads,
- Front callipers refurbished
- Replacement Turbo oil pipe
- Reconditioned power steering pump
- Replacement Stereo surround and brackets
- Greased ball joints, and propeller shafts (front diff - transfer case, double cardan – rear diff), steering drag link ends, steering knuckle, selector lever for Auto transmission.
- Genuine manifold pressure sensor
- Genuine Toyota brand new heater valve which is in the engine bay
- Genuine pair of sun visors
- Genuine radiator cap
- Genuine screw cover trim clips to replace missing ones in the cargo entrance
- Genuine rubber-cap moulding on rear passenger doors
- Genuine complete set of spanners, pliers and screw driver
- Load space liner rubber mats (pair)
Changed the following oil:
Toyota dealer supply:
- Oil and filter change (10W/ 40 engine oil)
- Transfer fluid for Gearbox – SAE 75W/ 90
- Auto transmission – ATF Dextron III
- Power steering fluid - ATF Dextron III
- Front differential – Hypoid gear 80W/ 90
Mail order supply:
- Rear differential (LSD) – Castrol Axel Z LS 90 (replaces Hypoid 90 LS)
The interior control switch miniature bulbs have all been replaced just like the original ones (with correct Amperage). The filter screen has been cleaned and now they shine even brighter. Upgraded map lights, center, and luggage compartment with LEDs, and they are very bright indeed.
Work done by previous owner prior to myself purchasing this car:
- New cylinder head fitted
- Head gasket set
- Head bolts
- Radiator
- Thermostat
- Timing belt kit
Old receipts of:
- Cylinder head changed
- Front wheel bearings
- Front nearside and offside anti-roll bushes changed
- Front and rear shock absorbers (hard/ soft button has no effect on rear shock absorbers)
- Rear coil springs changed with sturdy ones (no sagging)
- New rear exhaust box and tail pipe
There are many future improvements that can be done on this Surf. May be add tow hitch step, a front winch, a pair of roof rails, suspension or body lift? This project is endless.
It has never let me down, it is a Toyota after all!
