EXTERIOR
A return to form for VW with the Mk5 GTi. The 5 door variant with 17 inch wheels certainly serves up the ‘Q’ car image with typically restrained VW styling that peaks with a honeycomb grille and a retro red band. Presentation is really very good, with only a minor blemish above the front splitter to distract from an exceptionally clean and consistent package.
A subtle rear wing and chrome tail pipes complete the mild style exercise, while the unusual Xenons were an expensive option from new.
INTERIOR
VW’s GTI success story returned with the Mk5, in no small part down to the retro masterstroke of Tartan Fabric seats! Incredibly comfortable and supportive, the bolsters support all the right places whilst also showing incredibly well for their age.
Brushed aluminium works alongside clean and classy ergonomics with all of the switch gear, in typical Golf fashion, easy to identify and use.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
As one of the pioneers, in a market that is now flooded by turbo hatches, VW managed to retain the soulful characteristics of old school thrill with smooth, linear power delivery. The engine is a cracking unit and suits the chassis perfectly.
The car certainly never wants for pace on test, seemlessly pulling through the DSG gearbox; arguably at it’s very best in manual mode either operated by paddle shifters or the gear knob.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
This Mk5 still sits on its original 17″ Monza alloy wheels that are all in excellent condition with no kerb marks to report.
Brakes match the performance well, with plenty of life showing on both disk and pad.
HISTORY FILE
This ’55 plate GTi has enjoyed careful use over the years, as is plainly evident from the presentation both inside and out.
Fresh from a service to plugs, oils and filters the car is on the button and ready to go.
