Marcos Engineering Ltd was established in 1959 and has its name from its two founders, Jem Marsh and Frank Costin. Costin had worked in aviation, where plywood frames were common. He carried this concept over into automotive engineering: The Marcos GT, presented in 1964, featured a plywood chassis, made up from 386 separate pieces, onto which fibreglass panels were fixed. The construction was very lightweight, but also sturdy and proved an ideal basis for a successful racing career. Marcos never went into developing their own engines, instead they were sourced from other manufacturers, mainly Volvo and Ford, but also Triumph.
The plywood chassis was replaced in 1969 by a more conventional tubular steel frame. The visual design by the brothers Dennis and Peter Adams, however, lived on for over 4 decades and several changes of ownership: Marcos went out of business in 1972, was continued by Marsh - selling kits rather than fully assembled cars - from 1976 to 2000, was revived again in 2002 and finally liquidated in 2007. Even though the Marcos GT is extremely low-slung, it is suitable for tall people: Dennis Adams was 1. 95 m tall and made sure he could sit - or rather lie - in this unusual sports car.
