The Appeal

Land Rover's series I, II and III were the first model names for their iconic off-roader that would later evolve into the Defender. For the series IIa, some slight design tweaks were made as well as the introduction of a 2.2L diesel engine.

A manual four-wheel drive system means that drive to the front wheels can be engaged or dis-engaged, leaving the rear wheels with drive at all times. This is a convenient feature dependant on the terrain at hand.

For many, the series IIa is regarded as the most robustly constructed Land Rover, this led to impressive sales figures. From 1969-70, during production of the IIa, 60,000 Land Rovers were produced. The series IIa offers the iconic utilitarian styling that is synonymous with Land Rover while also offering refinement over the earlier variants.

Interior in good condition throughout given the age
Black seats in very good condition, free from any noticeable rips or tears
No head lining present but metal roof in good condition with some light marking and shows original green paint
Rubber floor mats present throughout and in good, used condition footwells appear to be in good condition free from any noticeable corrosion
Dashboard in fair condition throughout, in keeping with the age and mileage
Desirable period correct heater present and reported to function
Both doors remain in good condition, free from door cards with metal intact and painted to match exterior
High and low range gears with differential lock present
Pick-up interior in a good, used condition with a rubber floor mat and marking present but all metalwork appears to be intact, rear bench seats and brackets included with vehicle (not fitted) and remain in very good condition
Rear glass of cabin showing some signs of age but all intact and secure

The Exterior

Paintwork possibly originally green but has since been resprayed in RAF Blue Grey, remains in good condition overall
Current owner had new headlights fitted 10/22, remain in excellent condition but are missing the surrounds (unable to source at time of upgrade)

Full size spare wheel with all terrain tyre (both in good condition) mounted to the bonnet
Convenient military style quick release bonnet catches fitted and functioning
Rubber seals around rear glass have started to perish and may need some attention in future

The Mechanics

Renowned 2.2L diesel engine starts well from cold and reported to run without any knocks or bangs

Summary

There aren't many vehicles cooler than classic Land Rovers. However, a classic series IIa with RAF history may well come up trumps. This example has been very well looked after by the current owner, keeping the vehicle garaged when not in use and spending over £4,000 to pass an MOT although the vehicle is MOT exempt.

This is a great sign of the care this vehicle has received during its current ownership, kept true to its previous military specification with a handful of convenient and thoughtfully carried out upgrades to better day to day usability. If you are looking for a classic British off-roader, arguably none fit the bill better than this Land Rover Series IIa 88"!
