The Appeal
An early Bay Window Westfalia is the definitive expression of the California camper van ideal: a vehicle that carries as much cultural weight as it does camping equipment. Built in 1969 and fitted with Westfalia's celebrated fold-out interior, these left-hand-drive buses were the transport of choice for the generation that defined the decade, and survivors in good condition are increasingly difficult to find. This one spent its early life in California before being imported to the UK in January 2013, arriving with its original interior largely intact.
The current owner acquired 'Daisy' in 2014 and entrusted her to a local specialist for a comprehensive restoration. The bodywork was stripped back, all necessary welding carried out, and the whole van resprayed in cream and white. Door rubbers were replaced, new front and rear seatbelts fitted, and the interior completely restored: new upholstery, ceiling, curtains, and flooring, all executed in keeping with the van's original 1960s character. The original Westfalia cabinetry, sink, fridge, table, dashboard, steering wheel, and door cards are all present, and the pop-top canvas and cab bed remain correct to specification. Since restoration, Daisy has been stored in a carport and used sparingly for local outings, music festivals, and weddings.
Subsequent work has kept the van in fine fettle: new tyres and a paint touch-up in 2022; a new battery, engine clean, brake master cylinder, and dashboard electrics in 2025; and in 2026, an engine tune, full service, and MOT with no advisories. A 2020 upgrade fitted an electric power steering unit adapted from a Vauxhall Corsa.
The sale includes a period-appropriate accessory package: a Just Kampers cotton sun canopy and retro drive-away awning in orange, two 1960s folding chairs, a 1950s camping table, and a period flask.image.png4.06 MB
