The Appeal
Few three-box saloons do ‘durable’ quite like Mercedes’ unburstable W115. These cars are utterly reliable, serving as family transport, executive conveyance, and taxi rank staples for decades. And then there’s the appeal of, Paul Bracq’s crisp design, with its trademark ‘stack’ headlights.
First registered in the UK in April 1972, this smart 220 automatic has had just three registered keepers in the intervening 54 years. We’re told the vendor acquired it a year or so ago after it had been in storage since 2005. That lay-up followed a 2003 bare metal restoration, resulting in the well presented cream paintwork you see in the photos. The car is said to in good order and to run well too. The hardwearing tan MB Tex interior is a quiet reminder of how well-designed these cars are for drivers and passengers.
We’re told that since buying the car the vendor has undertaken a full service and reconditioned the carburettor. It has also been fitted with new fuel pump, electronic ignition, replacement coil and HT leads and a new battery. Since that work it is said to have covered negligible mileage over the past year and been used on dry days for car shows.
The vendor says:
“Lovely looking classic and very comfortable to drive, although only goes out on dry days usually to a car show. Very comfortable with smooth automatic gear change, attracts thumbs up from other drivers.”
Mileage: 26,471 miles indicated (stated as correct; service history from main Mercedes agent recorded up to 78,224 miles, therefore likely to be at least 126,471 miles)
Paperwork: Service history from a main Mercedes agent up to 78,224 miles, with numerous subsequent invoices mostly from Mercedes, old MOTs and invoices, handbooks, V5C
