The Appeal

With eighteen years of successful sales, the R107 SL isn't exactly rare, but seldom do we see early examples. For those seeking one of the first to hit UK roads, this is your opportunity.

This Mercedes-Benz 350SL dates from 1972 and features several early features like wind-up windows and low-back seats. It remains highly original, retaining its factory colour (Sand Beige Metallic) and is sure to appeal as a V8 variant. While there's some room for cosmetic improvement to the bodywork, this is a brilliant entry-level R107 that's a perfect candidate for rolling restoration or simply to enjoy as is. Having been part of a collection for many years, this SL has been used very little until the vendor acquired it in August 2022.

With a new soft top and recent mechanical work, it's ready to offer its new owner the joy of open-top motoring with a V8 rumble.

History and Paperwork

• First registered in February 1972
• Ten former keepers
• Part of a collection for many years and used infrequently
• Purchased from a classic car dealer in Lymington, Southampton in September 2022
• Many MOT certificates dating back to 1984 available
• Exempt from road tax and MOT testing
• Voluntarily MOT tested (valid until June 2024) with no advisories
• Never involved in an accident or written off
• An RAC history check has been carried out by the vendor and will be provided to the new owner
• A few service stamps from main MB dealers are present

The Condition

• New soft top in excellent condition - (no hard top is included)
• Some surface rust patches present, but overall the body appears solid and sound
• Paintwork looks great from a distance, but has some cracks and other blemishes upon closer inspection
• Original black MB tex interior in good condition
• The seats and carpet are in good condition
• Dashboard has a few small cracks, common for these cars
• An inexpensive Bluetooth radio has been installed, but the original Motorola unit will be included with the car
• No air conditioning model
• Original steering wheel, door cards, and trim are present
• The vendor advises that it would benefit from a respray

The Mechanics

• 3.5-litre petrol V8
• Three-speed automatic gearbox
• Underneath the car has undergone welding for the last MOT, then wax oiled for protection
• The vendor reports that it starts first time and drives well
• A very slight transmission oil leak is present, but the main leak has been repaired
• Most gearbox seals have been replaced
• All front subframe bushes have been replaced with a new kit from the SL shop
• Most of the ignition system has been replaced during current ownership, including the ignition module, ballast resistors, air idle valve, hoses, etc
• The alternator belt has been replaced
• A new battery has been fitted
