After this finishing second and fourth in the 1952 Mille Miglia, followed by victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a road-going version of the Mercedes-Benz W194 was created: the iconic W198 300 SL.
The 300 SL is one of the most iconic car designs ever created and its due to those “Gullwing” doors and innovative spaceframe chassis, so, it was Mercedes-Benz trick card they’d had up their sleeve for over 50 years to bring back and it was the SLS that was to be graced with the honour.
The SLS is AMG's first complete car, each drivetrain built by a single engineer… by hand.
The 6. 3 litre naturally aspirated V8 was not just taken from the C63 and inserted into the front of the SLS, AMG had modified the engine to such an extent it was given an all new engine code. To summarize, modifications included an all-new intake system, reworked valvetrain and camshafts, the use of flow-optimised tubular steel headers, de-throttling of the exhaust system and utilizing a dry-sump lubrication system.
All of this combined the SLS produces 563bhp, that’s 112 more than the C63 and the SLS is 110 kilograms lighter… you do the maths.
