1979 Ferrari 308GT4
Launched at the Paris Motor Show in 1973, the 308GT4 was the first Ferrari to use the new four cam V8 mid-engine layout that has become so familiar with modern Ferraris. It was also the only Ferrari designed by Marcello Gandini, legendary Bertone designer behind such iconic Lamborghinis as the Miura and Countach. Following on from the curvaceous 246 Dino, Enzo Ferrari wanted a modern looking 2+2 to take on Lamborghini, Maserati and Porsche. The resulting 308GT4 certainly met that brief with 2862 cars built of which 547 were delivered to the UK. Opinion was divided at the time but the one aspect all agreed on, was its sensational handling. With the space frame chassis derived from the 246 Dino developed with help from Niki Lauda the result was a 2+2 which handles like a sports car!
Our car is a late production car first registered in 1979 so is correctly badged as a Ferrari. The file has substantial history on the car going back to its first services and the service book with its original stamps is still with the car. I sold it to the current owner in 2016 having sold his Vetroresina 308GTB and he then embarked on a sympathetic restoration retaining as much originality as possible. Work included mechanical as well as structural and mileage since has been nominal, mileage at time of restoration was 66, 000 and current mileage is 67, 270. Since restoration, the car has been regularly serviced under 1500 miles put on the car.
