I bought this car just over 7 years ago, primarily to commute a couple of times a month to meetings in London. This it achieved admirably until everything came to an abrupt halt with the first lockdown – the car in my ownership has been totally reliable, never broken down, failed to start, etc., in fact other than routine servicing the only things it has needed have been a front wheel bearing and the gear selector lock-out switch on the brake pedal.
Apart from the engine, that is. I bought the car in the knowledge that the timing chains wanted doing. I ran it for a while until it got alarmingly rattly, then booked it into the garage for the job, when they told me they had an engine which had come from Eurojag for an XK8 which in the event didn’t need it. With timing chains and updated tensioners already done, and half the mileage, it was a no-brainer to fit this engine for about the same cost as doing my chains. When I got it, the engine had done around 75k miles and by now is probably up to 90k or so. So mechanically the car is pretty good, new battery fitted for the MoT. Last serviced about 2500 miles ago, so will have an oil change before sale. Full size spare.
The car has been on SORN since April last year, last week the garage collected it and carried out an MoT. There were a couple of minor advisories: rear tyres getting quite worn and nsr shock absorber lower bush needs renewing. Aircon is a bit weak from lack of use so will probably need re-gassing, and the driver’s door mirror doesn’t adjust electrically, although it folds away ok. The boot opening button can sometimes not work, but it always opens fine off the dash switch or the key fob.
Bodywork is pretty good overall but, as with most of these X-300s & 308s nowadays, the front wings are going to need attention sooner or later. I was a bit horrified when cleaning the car the other day to find rot at the base of the o/ s wing, I did a quick cosmetic job on it and it looks ok now but will need a repair panel (£59) or maybe drop on a good s/ hand wing (they just bolt on). On both wings there are a couple of small bubbles the size of a screw-head in the paint above the wheelarch. Otherwise the body seems fine.
The interior is good but with some rubbing wear to the leather in places, armrest is the worst, however there are no holes, tears, or unstitching, so some leather colourant would be a simple fix.
