1969 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Series 1 FHC Project

Highlights

  • Late model Series 1 for full restoration
  • Matching numbers and largely complete car
  • Just two owners from new
  • Rare opportunity to create your perfect E-Type
The E-Type evolved after its launch as Jaguar tried to develop it to suit buyers and meet constantly changing regulations, particularly in America. In August 1967 this work resulted in a visual change to the headlamps.
While these cars, sold between then and October 1968, are officially Series 1 cars, enthusiasts have come to identify them as ‘Series 1.5’ cars to differentiate them from earlier and later examples.
This 1968 Series 1.5 has been in the hands of just two owners, the most recent since 1976. Sadly most of its life has been spent dismantled after it was stripped in the 1980s for a restoration that never happened.
Its Heritage Certificate indicates that it is one of the last Series 1.5 - and so Series 1 - cars built. We are told that it is a matching numbers car and it appears to be largely complete, including a good condition Fiber Glass S1.5 E Type Bonnet . Opportunities to create your ‘perfect’, virtually brand new E-Type don’t come along very often and this is surely one of them.

The History and Paperwork

  • V5 records first registration on 27th March 1969
  • Other DVLA records indicate registration on 26th February 1964 which appears to be incorrect
  • Jaguar Heritage Certificate supplied with car
  • This shows a build date of June 1968 and original Opalescent SIlver Blue metallic paintwork
  • It also confirms this is a matching numbers RHD car
  • DVLA VIN records appear incorrect showing 1121908 chassis number
  • We suspect this shoud be 1E21908 which would be correct for a late Series 1.5
  • The last RHD FHC was chassis number 1E21959
  • The buyer may wish to clarify the VIN records with the vendor
  • DVLA records show that the engine carries the correct ‘7E’ prefix of XK E-Type motors
  • We note a colour change to green on 20th July 1978
  • Retains its original Wolverhampton area registration plate
  • New V5 applied for from DVLA with the correct details matching the vehicles Jaguar Heritage Certificate.
Vendor advises original parts with the car include:
  • Triple SU carburettors
  • Front suspension parts
  • Engine which we are told turns
  • 4 speed synchromesh gearbox
  • IRS unit and differential
This car is a Series 1 fixed head coupe, first registered in Wolverhampton and recently found in Cornwall near the Lizard. We understand that it is a two owner car, the seller acquiring the car in 1976 whilst living in the Midlands.
He fitted a tow bar soon after - to tow his dinghy - before relocating to Cornwall in the late 1980s. The car was then stripped in preparation for a rebuild that never happened, resulting in the car being stored in a shipping container for the next 35 years.
Recently rediscovered it clearly requires full restoration, although looks to be pleasingly complete. There is a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Certificate to verify the matching numbers status. We have not had sight of this but we have checked the V5 VIN number against E-Type chassis records. This is recorded as a seven digit number - all Series 1 E-Type VINs start 1E so we suspect there is a recording error.
The Heritage Certificate shows a build date of June 1968. The final Series 1.5 FHC RHD car was chassis number 1E21959, making this car potentially 51st from last Series 1 FHC RHD car built. The buyer may wish to check this information directly with the Certificate.

The Condition

  • Appears to be a virtually complete Series 1.5 FHC RHD car
  • Some preparation work appears to have already been done to some panels
  • Webasto-style sunroof model
  • Two bar and additional fog lights fitted to rear
  • Many original E-Type components and trim items
  • Fiber Glass S1.5 E Type Bonnet appears to be in solid, undamaged condition
  • Interior will require a full refurbishment
  • Blue leather interior with non-headrest seats
  • Original E-Type factory wheel appears to be fitted
  • Full restoration will be required
  • The buyer should expect to source trim and other parts

The Mechanics

  • 4,235cc straight six XK Jaguar engine
  • VIN records indicate that this engine carries the correct ‘7E’ E-Type XK engine prefix
  • 4 speed synchromesh manual gearbox
  • Matching numbers car
  • Original parts listed above including carburettors, suspension parts, engine, gearbox and IRS
