The Appeal

The BSA Bantam, built from 1948 to 1971, was by far the longest-running motorcycle model produced by the Birmingham-based company. Unlike the 4-stroke motorcycles produced at that time, that went from side-valve to overhead valve and from pre-unit to unit construction models, the 2-stroke Bantam engine remained largely the same, other than increasing in capacity from 125cc to 175cc and eventually acquiring a 4-speed gearbox.

The D14 version of the Bantam was introduced in 1968 and came in three versions, all with 4-speed gearbox – hence the D14/4 designation. It came with a larger diameter exhaust system and an engine compression ratio raised to 10:1. The three models were the D14/4 Supreme, the D14/4S Sportsman and the D14/B Bushman, the latter two fitted with heavier duty front forks. The D14 is widely regarded as the best iteration of the Bantam, thanks to continuous improvements made to previous models, but its lifetime was relatively short and it was replaced in 1969 by the D175.

Having been subject to a full restoration and an engine rebuild, this example looks superb and runs well.

The vendor bought the bike in July 2021, fresh from a recent refurbishment. He’s an avid collector with a large collection of classic bikes, but work and other commitments mean that he rarely has the chance to enjoy them as he would wish, and has decided to reduce the size of the collection.

The bike presents in extremely good condition, with the resprayed paintwork clearly done to very high standards. Close inspection reveals a few minor flaws: some slight damage to the seat, and some corrosion starting to appear inside the headlamp. The BSA badges on either side of the fuel tank are starting to show signs of their age, and the chrome exhaust has some slight scratches.

Despite its limited recent use, the vendor assures us that the bike starts and runs extremely well, as you’d expect of a bike that has had a full engine rebuild and associated work.

Summary

The golden era of Britain’s motorcycle industry, from World War II to the start of the 1970s, saw the country dominating the two-wheeled world with dozens of manufacturers and a host of iconic machines. The BSA Bantam was an ever-present throughout that golden era, with the D14 regarded as the model’s zenith. This one has been restored to high standards and is a fabulous-looking bike.
