The Appeal

A hugely successful rally car in its day, the Series 1 Lancia Fulvia Coupé spawned a number of HF (for “high fidelity”) versions which were built for racing and culminated in the Rallye 1.6 HF "Fanalone" (or "Fanalona") meaning "big headlamps" so named for its larger than normal headlights.
This is one such example of the very rare and hugely desirable Fanalone and has a competition history dating back to the early seventies, when it was rallying at the same time as the Lancia works team. Still in competition spec and with an FIA Historic Technical Passport, with suitably renewed safety kit it would be eligible for a variety of historic motorsport events.
That said, we wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t want to subject it to the white heat of competition. In its current road legal form, it remains a very pretty and entertaining car that could be enjoyed in a variety of other, less strenuous, ways.

Once the 1973 season was over the Lancia was sold to a new owner who used it in the 74-75-76 seasons and there are some photographs of the car from this period. The vendor made contact with them and they reiterated what the previous owner had said - that this was a '2000 series' body that came from Lancia with Group 4 equipment. We’re informed that the car was also raced outside of Italy in 1976.

The Interior

One look inside the car is all you need to know that it’s fully prepared for the serious business of competition. 

There’s a full FIA-compliant roll cage, Sparco bucket seats and a set of harnesses, though as it’s a while since the car has competed, elements of the safety equipment are likely to need updating before it’s eligible to enter some events.
The dash has been tailored to the needs of competition, too, with custom gauges, warning lights and toggle switches all neatly labelled, fuses and relays easily accessible to the co-driver, and a tripmeter. Capping it all is a lovely two spoke dished steering wheel. 
Nestling behind the seats is a fire extinguisher, which is not thought to be in date for competition use, and a pair of front crossbeams for the roll cage which have been temporarily removed, but which could easily be refitted.
Despite the co-driver’s door showing scrutineers’ approval stickers from a variety of events, the cabin remains in lovely condition with a little patina from its use but certainly looking far better than the interior of many competition cars. 

The only real blemish is some cracking to the top of the dashboard. 

You might not want to plan extended holidays in the car as the boot consists mostly of fuel tank and spare wheel, but it’s also neat and tidy.

The Exterior

Finished in Corsa Red, with a matt black bonnet to minimise reflections, and featuring the iconic Lancia livery with ‘LANCIA - ITALIA’ emblazoned on the bonnet, it certainly looks the part. 

Thought to have been restored in the nineties, the paintwork remains in good condition and, aside from a blemish near the centre of the white circle on the driver’s door, there’s little evidence of its competition use.
At the front, the trademark large headlights from which the car derives its nickname are present and correct and are here supplemented by an equally large pair of spotlights. 

To the side, we see the wheel arch extensions which mark this out as a Rallye and at the rear, just in case you were in any doubt as to the sporting intentions of this car, there’s a substantial pair of mudflaps.
In all, it’s both pretty and purposeful and, finished with a set of period gold wheels which are in good condition, it presents very well. On a practical note, the tyres reportedly all have good tread, while the underside is described as being well preserved, especially given the nature of the car’s usage.
In all, then, it’s a car which is going to turn heads in most settings and fit right in a competition situation.

The Mechanics

Pop out the bonnet pins, lift the matt black bonnet and you’re presented with an engine that matches the overall ethos of the car: it’s lovely to look at but also has an obvious sporting intent. 

The engine bay is clean and tidy and features the characteristic striped cam cover that marks this out as the 1.6HF engine. 
Having received a recent full mechanical check over which included a new brake master cylinder, plugs, carburettor seals and a new fuel filter, the car is said to drive exactly as it should with keen acceleration, strong brakes and no untoward noises to report. 

The seller tells us that it sounds like a ‘little monster’ which in our view is just as it should be. 

Whether on the road or a special stage, it’s sure to be entertaining.

A lovely example of the rare and highly sought after HF Rallye 1.6HF Fanalone that would make a fabulous addition to any collection or, for the more intrepid, a historic competition car to be savoured.
