The Appeal

Trying to improve the already beautiful Lancia Fulvia is a daunting task, but Zagato rose to the challenge by turning it into a sleek fastback and the result was simply magnificent. Renowned for their success on the rally stage with that rev-happy V4 driving the front wheels, the Fulvia remains one of the greatest Lancias of all time and we’re delighted to offer this delightful 1971 example.
Restored to a very high standard while retaining its original interior, this Lancia is a particularly fine specimen. The vendor informs us that with chassis number 001678, this is one of the 2,000 Series II 1.3S to share the 1600’s all-steel body, more rounded arches and trims. For those seeking a well restored, usable example of this design classic, then look no further.

The History and Paperwork

The Interior

  • Beautifully preserved original interior

We commend how original this interior is and it’s clear that a great deal of effort has gone into ensuring that as many of the factory materials are preserved as possible. 
The black vinyl upholstery on the seats, dash top and door cards all present really well and there’s not much in the way of wear. The headlining is clean and well supported and the rubber floor matting remains in really nice condition with barely any signs of wear.
The Fulvia is of course well known for its stylish wooden dashboard and the fascia in this example still looks really smart. There’s some slight patination in places, although it remains eminently presentable. All the instrumentation and switchgear seems in nice shape, and the vendor informs us that everything functions correctly.

The Exterior

  • Presents very well underneath with no damage, excessive wear or heavy road grim evident
This Lancia’s bodywork has evidently been well restored, with crisp swage lines, straight panels and bright paintwork. Zagato’s coachwork made the Fulvia a very exotic machine, and this example looks utterly wonderful.
There’s no heavy wear or significant blemishes to be seen and the vendor comments that there is no evidence of corrosion or heavy scratches in the paintwork. All the badging and trim looks in good order, as do the light lenses. The vendor points out that all the glass is original, with the exception of the windscreen. The Zagato boasts the rather interesting electric rear tailgate, which opens slightly to improve through-air ventilation. It sits upon period correct Cromodora alloys which remain in reasonably good condition for their age, with some slight corrosion and general age related deterioration.

The Mechanics 

  • 1.3-litre V4 engine
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • Front-wheel drive
The Fulvia’s capable front-wheel drive layout with its V4 engine and five-speed gearbox made it immensely successful on the rally stage and we’re sure it’s one of the main reasons the Fulvia was deemed worthy of a coachbuilt Zagato conversion.
The vendor informs us that the mechanicals have been restored and so this is a very healthy car. The V4 engine starts readily and revs freely with a playful rasp from the exhaust. The vendor demonstrates that it drives well and performs nicely.
We’re assured that there are no known faults or untoward noises and it is said to be ready to use.

Summary

A Lancia Fulvia Zagato is sure to rank highly on any petrolhead’s wishlist and this looks a really fine specimen. With great bodywork, a beautifully preserved interior and fit mechanicals, it is not one to be missed.
