The Appeal

The Series III was the final and most advanced of the leaf-sprung Land Rovers; the final chapter in a story that had begun with a sketch in the sand of an Anglesey beach back in 1947. In all that time, the so-called 'Series' Land Rovers changed very little, undergoing improvements rather than radical redesigns. Most notably, the Series III gained a new plastic grille, while the interior was updated with a vinyl dashboard, bringing the instruments directly in front of the driver for the first time.

This very early Series III 88" dates from November 1971.

The vendor tells us:

"The car came from a private collection owned by a very famous and well known tv personality. At some stage the car has evidently been subjected to a comprehensive and professional restoration with many tasteful and desirable upgrades, incorporating a galvanised chassis straight panels on painted in Marine Blue with Limestone steel wheels with heavy grade tyres."

We can't help noticing that as a Marine Blue short wheelbase 'rag top', with aftermarket wheel arch extensions, this Series III closely resembles the car driven by Daniel Craig's James Bond in 'No Time To Die'.

If you're looking for a great example of the marque, we can wholeheartedly recommend this Series III, the perfect classic for summer.

The History and Paperwork

  • Purchased by the vendor in November 2024
  • Little is known about the history of the car; the vendor acquired it with relatively little paperwork

The Condition

  • Rebuilt upon a new galvanised chassis which continues to present beautifully
  • Bodywork refinished in Land Rover 'Marine Blue'
  • OEM steel wheels finished in Land Rover 'Milestone'
  • The 'Birmabright' alloy bodywork is quite straight for a Land Rover of this vintage; the rear tub is a little rippled down the sides
  • The paint finish and galvanised cappings all look to be in good order with minimal wear
  • Bumper refinished in gloss black
  • Early 'Razor-edge' bonnet with spare wheel bracket
  • Aftermarket plastic wheel arch extensions added
  • Exmoor Trim canvas tilt in 'Sand' colour
  • Galvanised hood sticks
  • Aftermarket sports-style steering wheel
  • New floor panels fitted under new rubber tread mats
  • The doors are fitted with handmade wooden door cards and cappings
  • Fitted with three-abreast Exmoor Trim seats that the vendor states are in excellent condition
  • Rear bench seats fitted
  • Brand new inertia seatbelts with new Mountain bar; required for anchorage in soft-top versions

The Mechanics

  • 2.25-litre four-cylinder NA petrol engine
  • Four-speed manual gearbox with selectable four-wheel-drive and low-range
  • The vendor states that the gearbox selects ratios smoothly and doesn't jump out of gear
  • Engine bay is clean and well-presented, reportedly incorporating several upgrades
  • Off-road tyres reportedly in good condition with ample tread
